Juan Ramón Jiménez: A Poetic Journey

Juan Ramón Jiménez was a pivotal figure whose characteristics served as a liaison between the previous generation (Symbolist and Modernist) and the Generation of '27.

His personality was egocentric, tender, melancholy, and prone to breakdowns. These traits led him to seek solitude, reflection, and a quiet life, yet he simultaneously developed intense social and cultural activities.

He always knew his destiny was linked to the pursuit of beauty and knowledge through his work, which he dedicated exclusively to this endeavor. His body of work, a collection of poetry, he called "My Work."

Jiménez was aware that poetry, by using language heavy with dense conceptual and hermetic elements, was addressed to a select minority. In his poetry, various evolutionary phases are observed, categorized into three distinct periods:

First Period: The Sensitive Time (Early Influences)

This period follows the path marked by Romantic poets like Bécquer and Rosalía de Castro, and Modernists such as Rubén Darío. Works from this time include:

  • Cloud: His first book, which evokes his childhood in solitude, his obsession with death, and his passion for music and painting.
  • Ninfeas and Souls of Violet: Here, he sought to escape his obsession with death through the pursuit of beauty and identification with nature.

Second Period: The Intellectual Time (Pure Poetry)

This phase is characterized by pure poetry, employing a lyrical language that conveys the essence and meaning of things. It features a natural, sober expression, free from modernist rhetoric, and a profound longing for beauty and truth. Key works from this period include:

  • Diary of a Poet Newlywed: Disruptive in nature, this work contains vivid impressions from the ship journey that took him from Madrid to New York to celebrate his marriage to Zenobia. Mixing prose with verse, it uses precise, clear, and direct language. Topics are diverse, alternating between subjective themes (love, time, and death) and those related to his departure from Spain, travel, and life in the USA.
  • Eternities and Stone and Sky: These works aim to penetrate the mystery of beauty and eternity.
  • Second Anthology of Poetry: A compilation of his best poetry written between 1898 and 1918.

Third Period: American Exile and the Search for Absolute Truth

This period covers his work during American exile. His isolation and psychic depression accentuated his contemplative style and his relentless search for absolute truth. Works from this period include:

  • On the Other Side: This collection features the immensely long poem "Space," considered his masterpiece, offering a pantheistic vision of nature. It possesses great rhythmic and metaphorical richness.
  • Third Poetic Anthology: This work includes "From Rivers That Are," a poem dedicated to his deceased wife.
