Are Robots Superior to Humans?

We are all fascinated by machines made of inorganic matter. Isaac Asimov's (1920-1992) classic book, I, Robot, illustrates the profound influence robots have on a civilization that becomes entirely dependent on them.

The Three Laws of Robotics

In Asimov's novel, robots are programmed to follow three immutable laws:

  • First Law: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  • Second Law: A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  • Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Asimov suggested that robots are inherently better and purer than humanity. As robot psychologist Susan Calvin—Asimov's own alter ego—famously noted, there are essentially no "evil" robots.

These narratives explore the limitations of creators who cannot produce a being superior to themselves. The dilemma surrounding these beings—who lack a metaphysical soul but possess cognitive capacity—mirrors the Cartesian cogito: "I think, therefore I am." This logic serves as the engine for Asimov's work.
