The Augustan Family's Journey

Mark and Julie Augustan, an American couple, have four children: two boys and two girls. Carter is 16, Emma is 14, and Cana is nine. The youngest, Grady, age three, is their adopted son. Mark and Julie are not his biological parents; Grady is from Haiti, a Caribbean island, and his parents tragically died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Morning Routine and Commute

Laura Perez, 24 and single, usually starts her day feeling good when she wakes up at 7:00 AM. After a shower, she has breakfast with her family. In Mexico, it's common for single women to live with their parents. Due to the severe traffic in Mexico City, Laura never drives to work. Instead, she usually walks with her neighbor, a journey that takes about an hour. They sometimes take the bus, but buses are often crowded and slow. She arrives at work around 8:45 AM and starts at 9:00 AM.

Dedicated to Homeless Children

Laura is a social worker, a profession with great need in Mexico City, and she is one of the leaders in this field. She works for an organization dedicated to homeless children. The children she helps often lack parents and a stable place to live; some also have learning disabilities. Laura's job is to assist these children, starting at a social service center where they first receive food and basic care. Subsequently, she helps them find a family and a home. These children rarely attend school, so they usually don't know how to read or write.

Laura works hard and loves her job, despite sometimes witnessing very sad situations. The children are often angry and scared, and she frequently feels very tired after work. Nevertheless, she affirms, “I'm happy because I know that I help children.”
