Economic growth in Britain was moderate and gradual at first. Real wages for workers, surprisingly, remained stagnant or even declined for several decades, even as national income rose significantly. Living conditions in rapidly growing industrial cities were often dire, characterized by:

This stark inequality gave rise to profound new social dynamics. A distinct working class, often referred to as the proletariat, emerged. This class was defined not just by their role in factories but by a growing awareness of their shared difficult conditions and collective identity. Over time, workers began organizing to demand better wages, improved working conditions, and fundamental rights, although early union activity was frequently suppressed by authorities and employers.
Nevertheless, by the late 19th century, some progressive countries, such as Germany, began to introduce basic social protections. These included accident insurance and pensions, acknowledging the pressing need for a new social contract in the rapidly evolving industrial age.
Global Spread and Lasting Impact
The Industrial Revolution also had immense global implications. While it originated in Britain, its spread to other parts of Europe, North America, and eventually Japan was slow and uneven. Many regions faced significant barriers to industrialization, including:
- Limited access to capital for investment
- Abundance of cheap labor, which often discouraged mechanization
- Heavy reliance on imported manufactured goods
- Lack of necessary infrastructure or resources
Nonetheless, the process of industrialization eventually transformed the global economy, laying the foundational groundwork for modern capitalism and shaping the technologically advanced world we inhabit today.
