Appearance
In my opinion, appearance boosts self-confidence and self-esteem, and physical appearance really matters in a relationship. For instance, in a marriage, partners need to take care of themselves physically in order to sustain their relationship. Many women face marital problems as they go out of shape after having children. Those women who take care of their physical appearance tend to have a better rapport with their partners.
Nevertheless, many women are obsessed with looking good in relation to the kind of clothes they wear, make-up, body shape, hair style, skin tone, and so on. In recent years, the general definition of what it means to look good for a man has also changed, including wearing nice clothes, looking after their hair, taking care of their body, wearing fake tan, and waxing.
However, I think we are more obsessed with these issues because nowadays young people are living their lives online. They take pictures of themselves, they make selfies, and then they post them on the internet (Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Young people are focusing too much on their looks and their appearance.
The Advantages of Good Looks
On the one hand, those who are good-looking have an advantage over those who aren’t in their public lives. According to some studies, attractive people are usually hired sooner, get promotions more quickly, and are paid more than their less attractive workmates.
Individuality and Style
On the other hand, just because somebody dresses a certain way doesn’t mean they have money or they are poor. People have different styles and tastes, and we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
Plastic Surgery: A Balanced Perspective
Regarding plastic surgery, it’s obviously terrible if somebody gets excessive plastic surgery and ruins their face, like Michael Jackson. However, I don’t see anything wrong with changing something that you don’t like about your face or your body.
If plastic surgery makes one happier because they achieve a better-looking nose or whatever, who am I to judge? Like many things, it’s okay in moderation.
Conclusion
To sum up, I think appearance boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. A handsome man or a beautiful woman is much more admired in society. The problem is that it’s in our nature to compare ourselves to others, but if you look good, you feel good.
