Globalization's Impact on Economic Inequality

Globalization has created economic inequality between states. One way to analyze this imbalance is to consider each region's participation in the international division of labor. This categorizes countries based on their involvement in the manufacturing process.

Raw Materials

These countries are often the most underprivileged because raw materials have a low market value.

They often lack the industrial infrastructure to exploit these materials effectively. Major oil-producing countries are an exception due to the high cost of petroleum.

Manufactured Goods

Because goods production creates infrastructure and such products are worth more on the market, these countries become more developed. However, production is often supported by cheap labor, and the companies that supply the investments are frequently from more developed countries.

High-Tech and Financial Services

These countries are the most prosperous because high-technology products and specialized services generate large profits.

Positive Impacts of Globalization

Globalization has transformed the planet, often with positive effects. Examples include:

  • Economic
    • Economic Growth: Increased global wealth. The global system generates wealth.
    • Goods and Services: New production and transport systems have increased availability and variety for consumers.
    • Higher Human Development Index (HDI) score: Literacy levels rise, and extreme poverty rates decline.
  • Political
    • Democratization: More countries have adopted democratic political systems in recent decades.
    • Human Rights: Expanding worldwide.
  • Social
    • Cultural, Medical, and Scientific Exchanges: Increasing, along with individual mobility and contact between societies.
    • Global Connection: Developments in communications and expanded internet services provide quick and easy access to information anywhere in the world, producing new training, work, and leisure opportunities.

Negative Impacts of Globalization

Globalization also has negative impacts, including inequality. Other negative aspects include:

  • Political
    • States must now share some of their power with large corporations. This means that decisions affecting the general welfare are decided in part by large commercial firms.
  • Economic
    • Globalization has brought unequal growth, with some countries benefiting more than others.
    • This inequality is also internal, with a growing gap between wealthy minorities and the rest of the population.
  • Environmental
    • Overexploitation of resources and pollution resulting from economic growth are causing the deterioration of the environment.
  • Cultural
    • The dominance of Western models is causing a loss of cultural identity in some places, a phenomenon known as 'acculturation'.
