Future forms

Be going to

To talk about predictions with present evidence (you can see it is going to happen).

  • She’s going to have a baby.
  • Stop! You are going to fall.

To talk about general plans and intentions about the future.

- What are you going to do at the weekend? I’m going to paint my room.

Will + infinitive

To talk about predictions based on mental calculations (I think, I believe…).

  • - Where will you live when you are older? I think I’ll live in a big city.
  • - Will you have many children? Yes, probably I will have more than two children. I love them.

Decisions made at the moment of speaking:

  • (Your mother) This shopping bag is so heavy. I can’t carry it! (You) Ok, don’t worry, I’ll carry it for you.

Present continuous

To talk about future actions already organized and arranged. It’s more than just a plan. We use the simple present in Spanish and Catalan for these sentences.

  • - What time is the plane leaving? It’s leaving this evening at six. (a quina hora surt l’avió? Surt …)
  • - What are you doing at the weekend? Nothing much. I’m staying at home, watching TV and resting on the sofa. (Qué fas aquest cap de setmana?)

First conditional

If I see him, I will tell him everything.

If you don’t buy potatoes before lunch, I won’t make a Spanish omelette for lunch!

Might + infinitive

Use when you AREN’T sure about something: might + infinitive, or will perhaps + infinitive.

I will probably go to England this summer.

I will perhaps go to England this summer. It has the same meaning as “I might go to England.”

Define a word

It’s something used for + -ing (for cutting) bread: a knife.

It is something which we use when we want to cut bread.

It is a person who doesn’t speak much (quiet, reserved).

Talk about habits

1. In the past

I used to play with the yo-yo a lot.

I loved playing “churro mediamanga mangotero”.

While the students were leaving the school, we started playing marbles.

I remember watching “Los Chiripitifláuticos” when I was little.

2. In the present

I am into reading newspapers (to be into = similar to like or love).

I have played table tennis since I was 10 years old. (Present perfect to say how long you have done something.)

3. In the future

I’m going to start playing the guitar soon.

I will visit castles one day (I hope!).
