FESTIVALS AND FESTIVITIES
In our country we have lots of festivals and festivities, but I’ ll focus on Burriana’s festivities and festivals.
First of all, every year in August, the festival “Arenal sound" takes place in Burriana.
Burriana is completely changed during this festival. Many music bands come to Burriana for a week and people goes to these concerts by the sea and many people stay during all the festival sleeping in tends on the beach. The city is completelly full of tourists during the festival, but I don’t really like going out when the “Arenal sound” is taking place because I just like to be at home, however my children love this festival.
Secondly, we have a festivity called “las fallas” . Fallas is a traditional celebration held in commemoration of Saint Joseph in the city of Valencia and Burriana, it can be described as a non-stop street party.
On the one hand, a “falla” is a huge monument made with “ninots” these are a sort of big puppets made of cardboard and wood, which are burnt the Saint Joseph’s night. Although this festivity takes place during the month of Mars, we have activities for all the year. Every neighbourhood of the city, works all year long in the “casal faller”. These bunch of friends hire a band and during the week of fallas we can listen to bands in the street. The streets are packed with tourists for the whole seven days, but the prices aren’t really shot up in Burriana.
Every day at midday we go to watch some fireworks sound display and in the night we can watch spectacular fireworks.
The San Jose’s day everybody takes part in a parade and the people wear very ornate traditional costumes of “fallera”.
People light and set off fireworks and firecrackers all the time even the children. Local women wear traditional costumes that are terrific.
On the other hand, food is really important during “Fallas” and we can eat paella, a dish that is the speciality of the region and we can eat in the street chocolate and “churros” and so on, these are fattening pastries , but really delicious.
During Carnival, the month before Saint Joseph, we build floats and we organise a parade through the town and young women dress up in a traditional costume. The falleras ride on the float. The thing I don’t like at all is that people drink a lot of alcohol.
To sum up, you have to come to Burriana for the arenal sound or in fallas because it is very amusing.
