Grammar: Future Forms and Conditionals

Will

Form: Subject + will / won’t + infinitive

EXAMPLE: Arnau will be an astronaut.

EXAMPLE: I won’t get married.

Present Continuous

Form: I’m / He, She, It is / You, We, They are + verb + -ing.

Use to talk about future arrangements (appointments).

EXAMPLE: In July I’m travelling to Greece.

You have information about when it’s going to happen.

Be Going To

Form: I’m going to + infinitive / He, She, It is going to + infinitive / You, We, They are going to + infinitive.

Use when we talk about plans and intentions: We are going to go to the concert.

We have present evidence about how the future is going to be: She’s going to have a baby. Look at these clouds — it’s going to rain.

Zero Conditional

Form: If / Unless + Present Simple (conditional clause) + Present Simple (result clause)

EXAMPLES:

  • If I see clothes I like, I buy them.
  • I don’t buy clothes unless I like them.
  • If there isn’t gasoline, the bike doesn’t run.
  • The bike doesn’t run if there isn’t gasoline.

First Conditional

Form: If / Unless + Present Simple (conditional clause) + will / won’t + infinitive

Meaning: Possible, probable — events in the present and future.

EXAMPLES:

  • If I come home early, I will help you with your homework.
  • I’ll help you with your homework if I come home early.
  • I won’t help you with your homework unless I come home early.

Second Conditional

Form: If / Unless + Past Simple (conditional clause) + would / wouldn’t + infinitive

Meaning: Imaginary situations — impossible or unlikely in the present and future.

EXAMPLES:

  • If I were a millionaire, I would travel around the world.
  • If I were the mayor of Santpedor, I would organize more events.
  • If I weren’t the mayor of Santpedor, I wouldn’t organize more concerts.
