Web Navigation and Structure

  • External Hyperlink

    A hyperlink that opens a webpage located on a remote computer. External hyperlinks provide the links that tie the Web together and rely on HTML anchor tags.

  • Back Button

    A basic control used across various technologies. In a web browser, a back button allows an end user to navigate to a previously viewed webpage. A back button is also a feature of smartphone software and other consumer-oriented technologies.

  • Navigation Structure

    When using navigation requests, for each BSP application, determine the initial page, the navigation methods, and the target pages in a table with navigation paths.

  • Refresh

    An act or function of updating the display on a screen.

Web Elements and Metrics

  • Marquee

    A non-standard HTML element which causes text to scroll up, down, left, or right automatically.

  • Page Banner

    A typically rectangular advertisement placed on a website either above, below, or on the sides of the website's main content, linked to the advertiser's own website.

  • Hit Counter

    A computer software program that indicates the number of visitors, or "hits," a particular webpage has received. Once set up, these counters are incremented by one every time the webpage is accessed in a web browser.

User Interactions and Functions

  • To Hover Over

    To remain suspended over someone or something (often referring to a mouse pointer over an element).

  • To Highlight

    To indicate that text or other objects have been selected with a mouse or keyboard.

  • To Bookmark

    To create a shortcut to a previously viewed website.

  • To Download

    To copy data from one computer system to another, typically over the internet.

Software and Digital Content

  • Browser

    A computer program with a graphical user interface for displaying HTML files, used to navigate the World Wide Web.

  • Search Engine

    A program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used specifically for finding particular sites on the WWW (World Wide Web).

  • Podcast

    A digital audio or video file or recording, usually part of a themed series, that can be downloaded from a website to a media player or computer.

  • Audacity

    A free, open-source digital audio editor and recording computer software available for Windows, OS X, Linux, and other operating systems.

  • Microsoft FrontPage

    A discontinued WYSIWYG HTML editor and website administration tool from Microsoft for the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems.

Productivity and Social Media

  • Mail Merge

    The automatic addition of names and addresses from a database to letters and envelopes in order to facilitate sending mail (especially advertising) to many addresses.

  • Word Count

    The number of words in a document or passage of text.

  • LinkedIn

    A business-oriented social networking service, mainly used for professional networking.

  • Snapchat

    A mobile app that allows users to send and receive "self-destructing" photos and videos.
