First Aid Procedures
PAS: Protect, Alert, Assist
Protect: Prevent further accidents. This includes:
- Visibly signal the accident site.
- Cut off electric power if machinery is involved.
- Divert traffic away from vehicles.
Alert: Notify emergency services. To express with clarity and precision, state where you are calling from and indicate the exact location.
Assist:
- Check if the injured person is breathing or bleeding.
- Speak to them to see if they are conscious.
- Check for a pulse.
Prioritizing Injured Persons
Order of priority for assisting injured persons:
- Unconscious, without breath or pulse.
- Severe wounds or heavy bleeding.
- State of shock.
- With open wounds.
- Serious injuries.
- Fractures, eye burns.
- Remaining casualties.
Triage
Classification of injuries to separate those who need immediate assistance from those who do not, identify those who need help, and identify those who will not benefit from immediate medical attention.
Phases: Always assess. In case of doubt, prioritize the person whose condition is unclear or unstable over the stable person. Use a medicalized resource for severe patients.
Evacuation: Never evacuate anyone without knowing who they are, their condition, and where they are going.
CPR: Basic Life Support
Basic Life Support (BLS) maneuvers involve mouth-to-mouth exhaled air and manual external chest compression.
CPR is finished when the patient regains pulse and respiration, or when a factor threatens the life or physical integrity of the rescuer.
