Devastating Flood Strikes Errenteria
This month, Errenteria, a large town in Gipuzkoa, is suffering one of the worst floods ever recorded in the area. Sadly, 20 people have already died, and at least 150 are missing. The floodwaters have destroyed many buildings and severely damaged infrastructure.
Cause and Immediate Effects
The flooding began after heavy rainfall at the start of the month, brought on by several storms associated with a cyclone. The intense rain resulted in accumulations of 100 liters per square meter. Consequently, the lowest flats in buildings are inundated, causing residents to lose many personal objects, electronic devices, photos, and other belongings.
As a result of the flood, the town has descended into chaos:
- Roads are closed.
- Public transport is not operating.
- Shops are closed, preventing people from buying food and basic necessities.
Rescue Efforts and Outlook
Government forces, firefighters, and, most significantly, citizens are struggling to manage the chaos. They are actively helping everyone who has problems, needs food, or has been trapped by the water. Fortunately, with an anticyclone approaching, the rain is expected to stop soon, allowing calm to hopefully return to Errenteria.
Mayor's Reaction
The Mayor reacted with worry to these incidents. “I've never seen this town in such a situation,” he said recently. He also expressed his gratitude: “I'm very grateful for all these people who have helped each other, sometimes risking their own lives.”
The Ethics of Downloading Music Online
Nowadays, millions of people download music from the internet. As a result, sales have fallen, and artists often don't earn enough. I don't think it's right to download music illegally, but most people do.
Impact on Artists and the Music Industry
Firstly, as people download music—or other media like books and films—sales fall, and musicians don't earn money from their CDs. While buying CDs may not be cheap, we should understand the significant work involved in publishing music. As a result of this loss of income, bands may need to raise the price of concert tickets, leading to fewer people attending their shows. It creates a difficult cycle.
Music as a Livelihood
Additionally, believe it or not, musicians and bands are working professionals, and music is what provides them with the money to live. For this reason, if we don't pay for their work, they are essentially working for nothing. Teachers wouldn't want to teach students without being paid, nor would lawyers defend the accused without earning something for their services.
Concluding Thoughts
To sum up, while I understand why people download music illegally, I prefer to buy my favorite bands' music so that they can continue composing and playing.
