English Grammar Notes

Past Simple

Uses the -ed ending or the first irregular form. Describes actions completed at a specific time in the past. The auxiliary verb is DID/HAD (though HAD is usually for possession/experience, not the main auxiliary for simple past actions).

  • Affirmative: I went to...
  • Negative: I didn't go...
  • Interrogative: Did you go...?

Time expressions: at two o'clock, in 2003, last night, last year, yesterday.

Present Perfect

Structure: HAVE/HAS + Past Participle (or 3rd irregular form).

  • Affirmative: I have played...
  • Negative: I haven't spoken...
  • Interrogative: Have you met...?

Time expressions: already, ever, just, never, since, yet (cannot be used with a specific past time).

Adverbs with Present Perfect

  • Just: Affirmative form. Action that has just occurred. Placed between have/has and the participle.
  • Already: Affirmative form. Action that has already finished. Placed between have/has and the participle.
  • Yet: Negative form. Action has not happened yet (placed at the end). Interrogative form. Asks if something has happened (placed at the end).
