Electricity Generation and Essential Energy Sources

Power plants are facilities where electricity is generated from various energy sources. All stations operate using the same fundamental system: they turn a turbine connected to a generator, which produces electricity.

Addressing Depleted Energy Resources

To address the problem of depleted energy resources, there are two main options:

  • Reducing energy consumption.
  • Utilizing renewable resources.

Environmental Pollutants from Energy Production

Many power plants expel gaseous pollutants into the atmosphere, altering its composition and causing pollution. Pollution also occurs during the production, transportation, and consumption of energy sources. Pollutants can be distinguished into two types:

Primary Pollutants

  • The primary pollutants: These are substances that are discharged directly into the atmosphere by direct sources. These include sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon oxides, hydrocarbons, and metal particles (accounting for approximately 90% of emissions).

Secondary Pollutants

  • The secondary pollutants: These occur as a result of physical and chemical reactions involving primary pollutants within the atmosphere.

Major Environmental and Health Impacts of Pollution

Pollutants are causing several major issues:

Specific Effects of Pollution

  • Acid rain: Acid rain is precipitation (often a mixture of water and pollutants) that negatively affects vegetation, lakes, rivers, the health of people and animals, and damages buildings and monuments.
  • The greenhouse effect: This is the process by which a planet's atmosphere warms up, allowing visible solar radiation to enter but trapping or preventing the emission of heat from the planet's surface. While the greenhouse effect is natural, the emission of polluting gases has intensified this effect.
  • Health problems: Due to air pollution, many people suffer from respiratory and lung issues, heart problems, itching, and allergies.
  • Water pollution of the sea: Accidents and collisions cause spectacular oil spills, resulting in significant water pollution and oil slicks.

The Necessity of Sustainable Energy Consumption

We are accustomed to wasting energy. Approximately three-quarters (3/4) of global energy sources are consumed by just 15% of the population, while the rest barely has access. We must move towards sustainable energy consumption, which entails:

  • An equitable allocation of energy resources, ensuring we do not only consider current welfare.

Practical Measures for Energy Conservation

  • Avoid using defective appliances and wasting light.
  • Avoid excessive heating or cooling.
  • Encourage the use of public transport, walking, or cycling.
  • Encourage the use of solar energy and other renewables.
