Safety Rules When Working With Electricity

Works in electrical facilities must be carried out by suitably qualified individuals and, as a rule, without electrical power. Works in locations where voltage is present can only be carried out by workers suitably qualified for such situations, who have received specific training and who use tools properly approved for working with electrical power.

Security during the carrying out of work is ensured by switching the electrical power off and by electrical lockout of the parts of the plant where the works are being carried out, and maintaining this lockout while the work is underway.

Fibrilación ventricular: contracción y relajación descontrolada de los ventrículos.

Lockout for De-energized Work

To achieve lockout and to ensure safety at the place of work while the work is taking place, it is necessary to respect the following rules, commonly known as the Five Golden Rules, for works without electrical power:

  1. Separate completely (isolate the installation from all possible sources of electrical power).
  2. Fix (protect against reconnection) in the open position all the breaker components or switching devices in the ON position, or adopt preventive measures when that is not feasible.
  3. Verify there is no electrical power, after having previously identified the place of work and the installation which has been placed without electrical power.
  4. Ground and connect in a short circuit.
  5. Protect against nearby power sources and delimit the working zone.
