The Electric Scooter Accumulates 3,000 Fines in Barcelona in 2018
The City Council and the Urban Guard warn that these vehicles are not toys, so their drivers must respect the regulations.
The increase in sanctions to electric scooter drivers, about 3,000 in 2018, has led the Barcelona City Council to redouble the information about the traffic regulations of these vehicles, which has been in force since 2017, informed this Friday Ricardo Salas, mayor of the Urban Guard. Manuel Valdés, Manager of Mobility and Infrastructure of the consistory, stressed that these vehicles are not toys and emphasized that it is important to remember the regulations to all those who have thought of buying or giving them away.
Electric scooters are prohibited from driving on sidewalks. The preferred place to circulate is the bike lanes. In the case of those who go by lanes enabled on the sidewalk, should not exceed 10 kilometers per hour of speed, being 30 km/h the maximum speed for those who circulate on the road, asserts Valdés. He also stressed that only people over 16 years old are allowed to travel and that the use of a helmet is mandatory for drivers of scooters over 25 kilos.
Of all the fines, about 2,000 have been imposed on individuals and the rest on companies. According to Salas, the infractions that have been detected in individuals are, for the most part, for not wearing a helmet, driving on the sidewalk, ignoring traffic lights, checking the phone, wearing headphones and even driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The informative campaign will begin next week and 80,000 diptychs will be distributed in all-electric scooter stores in the city. A summary of the circulation rules of these devices and safety recommendations will appear in the diptychs.
