Effective Educational Assessment Methods
Overall assessment involves a set of capacities expressed in the objectives. It addresses cognitive, emotional, and social aspects, ensuring interest in all developmental areas.
Continuous and Formative Assessment
Continuous assessment is inseparable from the educational process. It is a dimension that accompanies the learning process; thanks to it, teaching may be corrected, improved, and adjusted to the real needs of children.
Formative assessment plays a role in helping to improve processes and achieve better results. It is purely regulatory, self-correcting, and guides the educational process. It shows the results achieved at the end of a work unit, a period of time, or a cycle to verify whether objectives have been reached.
Observation and Documentation Tools
Observation is the best means for evaluating the learning process because it provides data on the personality of children, their development, and their progress against school objectives.
Anecdotal records or anecdotes are instruments of observation. They are a type of open registration where any event of school life can be entered. They are useful for collecting unforeseen or exceptional facts, often referring to social and emotional behavior.
Checklists or verification tools are very easy to complete but require previous work to select the behaviors the child may exhibit during observation. They are used especially to check whether the objectives set are achieved in certain activities.
Classroom Management and Communication
A journal of class is a registration tool used to collect the most interesting events that have happened in a school day. While there is a risk of subjectivity, it is very suitable for exchanging information across different shifts.
The interview is a technique to exchange information and may have different purposes. To achieve them, we must:
- Set the date, time, and approximate duration.
- Provide the right location.
- Maintain an honest and respectful teacher attitude.
- Follow a prepared script.
Interviews should be conducted at the beginning of enrollment, when a problem is shown, or when parents demand it.
Evaluation Questionnaires and Rating Scales
Questionnaires are mainly used in the self-evaluation of teaching and the evaluation of the school. They are a set of questions designed to ascertain opinion or satisfaction regarding activities developed by the center. This helps identify aspects to be maintained or modified. They may be open or closed, and their objectives are to conduct assessments, analyze views, and validate usefulness.
Rating scales clarify the degree of achievement of objectives. Above all, they record progress and can also register a child's behavior regarding activities of daily life. They are very useful for seeing the progress of a certain aspect within an entire group.
