DVD Data Storage
The DVD data zone consists of a highly reflective layer called the land. Projections known as pits rise from this land. These pits represent recorded data. The data track is recorded helically from the inside to the outside of the disc.
Pixelated Images and Freezing
If a DVD player displays pixelated images and freezes with different discs, the first step is to clean the lens.

DVD Servo Systems
DVD players have five servo systems:
- Focus Control
- Track Monitoring
- Coil Monitoring (Tracking)
- Sled Servo
- Disc Speed Control
Symptoms of a Dirty Lens and Cleaning Procedure
A dirty lens can cause various playback issues. Here's how to clean it:
- Moisten one end of a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol.
- Shake off excess alcohol so the swab is damp, not wet.
- Gently place the swab on the center of the lens without applying pressure.
- Move the swab in a spiral motion, gradually widening the circle.
- Flip the swab and repeat with the dry end to remove any residue.
Utility of Interlaced Data Blocks

Laser Beam Focus Servo System
The focus control servo manages the laser beam focus. A comparator block determines if the beam is perfectly aligned.
Function of the Sled Servo
The sled servo controls the horizontal or radial movement of the disc.
DVD Video Compression System
DVDs use MPEG-2 video compression.
Controlling Laser Diode Light Output
A photodiode inside the laser diode capsule measures the emitted light. This measurement allows an automatic control circuit to compensate for the gradual decrease in light output as the laser ages. A technician can also adjust the automatic control's range based on manufacturer specifications.
