Ecological Importance Cuatro Ciénegas is a rare sanctuary, teeming with endemic species. Over 75 species of fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, mollusks, insects, and more than 400 species of cacti exist nowhere else. This desert oasis also supports a variety of bats and migratory birds. Other unique features include gypsum dunes, native grasslands, xerophytic thickets, canyons, and the hinge-back turtle (Terrapene coahuila). Threats Groundwater and surface water extraction for irrigation, habitat transformation, and the spread of invasive species are major threats. Grazing, mesquite woodcutting, illegal cactus harvesting, poaching, and unregulated tourism also impact the area. A Strategy for Success Declared a protected area in 1995, Cuatro Ciénegas faces challenges common to many protected areas. Partnerships are key to its conservation. The Parks in Peril (PiP) program is working with local organizations to acquire private land for conservation. Desuvalle, promoting sustainable resource use, purchased two parcels in 2000, including gypsum dunes and freshwater springs. The acquisition of private lands is a crucial strategy. PiP also fosters sustainable resource use, such as artisan cooperatives producing mesquite crafts. These provide income and reduce environmental impact. The ejido La Vega sells mesquite sculptures at the visitor center. Pronatura Noreste (PNE), active for 20 years, works with ejidos to improve water quality and levels by constructing low-cost water controls. PNE's efforts have improved habitat via over 130 wells, rejuvenating wetlands crucial for hinge-back turtles. Hydrological studies continue to inform water protection strategies and garner political support. Other projects focus on biodiversity, including removing invasive fish and reintroducing native mammals like the bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana). PiP anticipates purchasing 10,000–16,000 additional acres and improving water quality and protection of 4,800–6,000 hectares of key habitat by 2007, as detailed in site consolidation plans. |
