Professor Diane's Six Learning Types Framework

Professor Diane identifies six core learning types essential for effective pedagogy:

  • Acquisition
  • Discussion
  • Investigation
  • Practice
  • Collaboration
  • Production

Each learning type corresponds to different learning experiences achieved through various activities. These activities often combine several learning types and utilize either conventional technologies (like books) or digital technologies (like e-books or interactive platforms).

Optimizing Technology in the Classroom

How much technology is ideal in a classroom?

The ideal amount of technology depends on the educator's experience level. It is possible to start small, perhaps with one computer and one digital camera. As educators better understand the potential for learning, the need for more resources—for the students—becomes apparent.

Defining the Six Learning Types

Acquisition

Acquisition involves receiving information, such as:

  • Listening to a presentation or podcast.
  • Reading from books or websites.
  • Watching demonstrations or videos.

Discussion

Discussion requires the learner to express their ideas and questions, and to challenge and respond to the ideas and questions from the teacher, and/or from other students.

Investigation

Investigation guides the learner to explore, compare, and critique information, documents, and resources that reflect the concepts and ideas being taught.

Practice

Practice involves adapting actions to the task goal and using feedback to improve the next action to achieve that goal.

Collaboration

Collaboration uses discussion, practice, and production to create a shared output that utilizes the participants' knowledge and inquiry. Building on investigation and acquisition, it is about taking part in the process of knowledge building itself.

Production

Production is the way the teacher motivates the learner to consolidate what they have learned by expressing their current conceptual understanding and how they used it in practice.
