Chapter 1
1. Why was...The Fertilising Room was an important place
because humans were mass-produced there.
Mass-production was society’s most important
tool.
2. How did...The Bokanovsky process created groups of
identical men and women. Everyone had the
same attitude so there was no conflict.
3. What happened...Thirty per cent of the female embryos
developed normally. The others were given a
male sex hormone. This made them sterile and
they wouldn’t produce eggs.
4. According to...According to the Director, the secret of
happiness was to make people like who they
were and what society made them do.

Chapter 2
1.What happened... The babies moved away in horror.
2. Why were...Delta babies were conditioned to hate books as
they might read something which could undo
parts of their conditioning. They were also
conditioned to hate flowers in order to abolish
the love of nature, which people can enjoy
without buying a single thing.
3. Why was...Reuben’s experience was important because it
was how the principle of sleep teaching was
first discovered.

Chapter 3
1.Why didn't... The State believed that strong relationships and
strong emotions between family members were
dangerous and therefore bad for society.
2. Why was...In the past, people believed in liberty,
individuality and freedom. They also believed
in democracy.
3. What was...Soma was the perfect drug. People took it
because it caused pleasant hallucinations
without any side effects. They could take a
holiday from reality whenever they liked.

Chapter 4
1. Why did Fanny...Fanny disapproved of Lenina’s relationship
with Henry because according to the rules, it
was wrong to have a long, intense relationship
with one man.
2. Why did Lenina...Lenina thought the Savage Reservation would
be an exciting place to visit because there was
no civilisation there and people still lived like
they did in the past.
3. Why was...Fanny was horrified to discover that Lenina
was interested in Bernard because he didn’t
have a good reputation, he didn’t like games
and he spent most of his time alone. He was
also ugly and small and looked low-caste.

Chapter 5
1. Why did Bernard...Bernard had special feelings for Lenina but
Foster and Hoover were talking about Lenina
as if she were a piece of meat.
2. Why did Lenina...Lenina spoke loudly in the lift so that everyone
could hear.
3. What made...Helmholtz was an outsider like Bernard
because he had exceptional mental abilities. He
also felt that something was missing from his
life, but he didn’t know what.

Chapter 6
1.What were... The bodies were used to produce 400 tons of
phosphorus every year. The advantage of this
was that people continued to be socially useful
even after they were dead by helping to make
plants grow.
2. Why did...The Director signed the permit because it came
from the World Controller’s Office and had
already been signed by Mustapha Mond.
Everything was perfectly in order.
3. What happened...The girl in New Mexico got lost while she was
riding a horse on one of the mountains.

Chapter 7
1. What bad...Bernard heard that the Director had announced
that he wanted to transfer Bernard to Iceland.
2. What disgusted...There was rubbish everywhere, with flies and
dogs all around it.
3.Why weren't... In the New World, people were kept free of
diseases. Their bodies were kept young and
they were given transfusions of young blood.
Most of them died when they were about sixty.

Chapter 8
1.Why was... Bernard was surprised when he first met John
because he was dressed in Indian clothes but,
his hair was blond, his skin was white, and his
eyes were blue. He spoke in strange English.
2.What did... Bernard realised that Linda was the girl who
had come to New Mexico with the Director
and that the Director was John’s father. He
realised this when he heard that John’s father’s
name was Tomakin, because the Director’s
name was Thomas.
3.Why did... People on the reservation thought Linda was
bad because nobody was supposed to be with
more than one person. If you had more than
one partner, people thought you were very bad.

Chapter 9
1. Why did Linda feel...Linda felt ashamed because she had been taught
to believe that only animals and savages were
mothers and had babies.
2. Why did Linda tell...Linda told John that in the ‘Other Place’
everyone belonged to everyone else and
everyone was happy and never sad.
3. Why did Mustapha...Mustapha Mond agreed to let John and Linda
come to London because he thought they would
be of scientific interest to him.

Chapter 10
1. What reason...The Director’s reason for transferring Bernard
was because Bernard’s unconventional ideas
were dangerous to the order and stability of
society. Bernard was a danger to civilisation.
2. What events...The Director felt humiliated because John fell
on his knees in front of him and said in a clear
voice, “My father!” There was hysterical
laughter in the room.
3. How did...Bernard was treated as an important person by
everyone at the Centre. Henry Foster did
everything he could to be friendly to him and
Bernard could have any woman he wanted.

Chapter 11
1.How did John...John didn’t seem to be impressed with civilised
life in London and the mass-produced people
upset him.
2. How did the...They spent two mornings a week in a Hospital
for the Dying. All the best toys were kept there
and the children got chocolate cream when
someone died.
3. Why was...Lenina was confused and frustrated because
John wouldn’t touch Lenina or look at her, but
sometimes when she turned round suddenly, she
saw him watching her and then she was sure he
liked her.

Chapter 12
1. Why didn't...John didn’t want to meet any more people. He
didn’t like Bernard’s civilisation or his civilised
people.
2.Why did Helmholta... Helmholtz’s students reported him because he
had read them some poems which he had
written. The poems were about being alone and
the students had been taught that being alone
was wrong.
3. Why did John...John wanted their love to stay pure and
beautiful. He wanted to do something heroic for
Linda and he wanted them to get married.

Chapter 13
1.Why did John's... The nurse saw the pain on John’s face. She had
never seen any of the visitors react like this.
2. What was...He shouted angrily and couldn’t control himself.
He began to shake her.
3.Why did John... John believed that soma was poison to the soul
and the body, and that people who needed it
were slaves. He wanted to bring the people
freedom from it.

Chapter 14
1. According to...The world was stable now. People were happy,
healthy and safe. They weren’t frightened of
death, their bodies didn’t get old and they were
conditioned to behave well.
2.How did... Bernard jumped to his feet, stood in front of the
Controller and started to cry. He asked the
Controller to give him another chance.
3.What surprising... He said that the people who were sent to islands
were the most interesting in the world. They
thought independently and they didn’t obey the
rules of society.
4.Why wasn't... The Controller wanted to continue his
experiment. He wanted to see what happened
when a savage was transferred to civilisation.

Chapter 15
1. Why did John go...John had resolved to live independently without
the comforts of civilisation. He wanted to
punish himself for being so severe to Linda in
her last moments.
2. Why did John's...The next afternoon, an enormous crowd of
helicopters appeared. They landed one after
another and hundreds of people got out. They
stood in a wide circle round the lighthouse and
stared and laughed at John.
3.Why did John do... When John saw Lenina, he ran towards her like
a madman and hit her with the whip.
4.what happened... In the end, John hanged himself from an arch at
the other end of the room in the lighthouse.
