The Tragic Fate of Santiago Nasar
Santiago Nasar, a wealthy and respected man, becomes the target of Pedro and Pablo Vicario, brothers seeking vengeance for their sister Angela's dishonor. Angela's husband, Bayardo San Román, returned her just hours after their lavish wedding, a grand celebration attended by prominent figures, including Bayardo's influential military father. Bayardo, a mysterious newcomer to the village, had chosen Angela, a beautiful young woman from a modest family, seemingly without genuine affection. The marriage was arranged, and Angela's family, driven by their poverty, compelled her to accept.
The reason for Angela's return was her lack of virginity on their wedding night. She named Santiago Nasar as the man who had deflowered her. Upon hearing this, Pedro and Pablo felt obligated to restore their sister's honor by killing Santiago. They armed themselves with pig-killing knives, openly declaring their intentions to the townspeople. News of their plan spread rapidly, reaching everyone except Santiago and his family.
The local police, alerted to the impending murder, confiscated the brothers' initial knives. However, being butchers, Pedro and Pablo easily acquired replacements and continued their pursuit of Santiago. Meanwhile, Santiago remained unaware of the danger, still celebrating the wedding festivities, which coincided with the bishop's visit to the village. Many gathered to receive the bishop's blessing, including Santiago.
Santiago went to the pier to greet the bishop, but the bishop remained on his boat, offering blessings from afar. Separated from his friend Cristo Bedoya, Santiago left the pier. Cristo soon learned of the Vicario brothers' intentions and desperately tried to warn Santiago, but his efforts were in vain.
Santiago briefly visited his girlfriend's house before heading towards the location where the Vicario brothers lay in wait. Oblivious to the impending danger, he was suddenly confronted by a crowd urging him to flee. His delayed reaction proved fatal. He ran towards his home seeking refuge, but his mother, Placida Linero, mistakenly believing he was already inside, bolted the door to protect him from the approaching brothers.
Trapped and defenseless, Santiago was caught by Pedro and Pablo. They unleashed a barrage of knife blows, ultimately killing him.
