Yar‘Adua: President from 2007-10, Northern Muslim, His election and inauguration marked the first time that there was a peaceful transfer of power between elected officials in the history of Nigeria

Goodluck Jonathan:Southern Christian, Took over as President after Yar’Adua died in office, His ascension to President upset a lot of Northern Muslims, as they thought they would receive the next President since the South got Obasanjo, Won reelection in 2007, Lost to Buhari in 2015 in the first peaceful transition of power to an opposition party

Hausa-Fulani:Northern Muslim who makes up 30% of the population, Hausa and Fulani tribes joined after Fulani Jihad in 19th century

Igbo: predominantly Christian tribe who makes up 18% of population (live in Southeast)

Indirect Rule: Local leaders continue to rule, subject only to the limited supervision of imperial officials

Middle Belt:Center of the country,No single ethnic group dominates

People’s Democratic Party (PDP):Political party established by Obasanjo in 1998, Dominant party is Nigerian politics from 1999-2015, Contained a flexible ideology so they could maintain power, Established a vast patron-client network that included people of all ethnicities to assure they would remain in power, Also agreed to rotate the Presidency between the three tribes/regions, Lost in 2015 election to APC

Yoruba:Mixed religious tribe (majority is Christian), 21% of population, Live in Southwest, Military in barracks, Nigeria had to make the distinction between “military in government” and “military in barracks” because of the incredibly large role the military plays in government with most high positions being held by generals

Sani Abacha: Overthrew the Third Republic, Carried out a radical program of economic development- Ended Babangida’s privatization initiatives. Brutal political suppression- Known as most brutal of all leaders. Jailed the elected gov. For treason. Publicly executed civil society voices who opposed him. When he died it was known as “the coup from heaven”

Ethnic Rotation: Silent agreement from within the PDP to rotate the Presidency between Northern and Southern leaders, Got messed up when Yar’Adua died and Jonathan ascended to the Presidency

Prebendalism: Nigeria’s form of patron-client network, Rampant throughout country- By far the worst of the countries in Comp Gov. Politicians will take office and their tribes will reap the benefits as that is normally where politicians loyalties lie
