Channel Signaling: Types and Performance

Channel-Associated Signaling

Channel-associated signaling transmits signals needed to manage and control a particular channel conversation along with the channel itself. Traditionally, the signals corresponding to a circuit are transmitted by the circuit itself.

Common Channel Signaling

The introduction of stored program control (SPC) leads to a novel method of marking. The control unit can send signaling channel signals for all circuits which are in conversation on a particular route. This method is called common channel signaling.

Signaling System Performance

When establishing a signaling system, it's necessary to determine the role the intermediate centrals will play in the performance of their control units during the call establishment phase.

Basic Alternatives:

  • End-to-End Signaling: The control unit of the first plant controls the establishment of communication until it is complete. It sends only the information necessary for each central to complete the connection to the following core, then being released.
  • Section-by-Section Signaling: The control unit of the first plant involved controls the connection of the next installment to the central control unit of the latter, storing all information corresponding to the call and then releasing. In turn, the second control unit does the same, and so on until the last, which completes the last leg of the connection.
