The Ending (p.231)
Auggie feels: “I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives”. Do you agree with Auggie? Why (not)? Do you think this will ever happen to Auggie? Why (not)? It’s a nice thought because it’s a beautiful way of acknowledging a person’s work or actions and it’s an excellent way to boost this person’s confidence.
This will happen to Auggie at the graduation ceremony when he’s awarded the Henry Ward Beecher medal and the entire audience applauded him.
Part 7 (Miranda)
Camp Lies (p.236)
What does Miranda mean that these girls were “at the top of the food chain”? Why do you think Miranda was ashamed to face Via after returning home from camp?
She means that they were very popular and they could control anyone.
Because at the camp, Miranda had told her new friends many lies about her life, pretending she was Via, she told them she lived on her street, and she even told them that she had a deformed brother. This lies made her very popular at the camp. Then, when she returned, she phoned Ella and not Via because Ella didn’t ask questions and she was fun.
School (p.239)
Why do you think it annoyed Miranda that she and Ella had changed and Via had not? Why do you think Miranda lied to Mr. D. about “her brother being deformed” so he’d change the play from The Elephant Man?
Probably because Miranda was somehow “forced” to change at the camp due to her parents divorce and Via could stay the same because she hadn’t had such changes in her life. Probably, she was also annoyed because, deep inside, she missed being friends with Via, but the fact that she hadn’t changed made it difficult.
I think Miranda lied to Mr. D. Because she assumed Auggie would come to watch the play and she didn’t want him to feel uncomfortable.
What I Miss Most (p.241)
How did being at Via’s house make Miranda feel?
She had missed her family because they were always welcoming and nice to her, and she always felt safe around them, even safer than in her own house. And, of course, she loved Auggie.
Extraordinary (p.243)
Why do you think Miranda got “sick” on the opening night?
Because neither her mother nor her father, boyfriend or Friends, not even. Miranda knew she was going to be extraordinary that night but there wasn’t anyone there to see her. She peeked through the curtain and saw Via’s parents and Auggie, and it was probably then when she decided to let Via have her big night.
The Performance (p.246)
Do you think Miranda regretted her decision? Why (not)?
Not really, the only bittersweet moment for her was when all the audience rose to their feet to give Justin and Via an ovation. But then, she saw Via’s family going to the backstage and looking happy and she also found Auggie, who was kind of lost and went to greet him. She didn’t regret her decision because it made Via’s family happy and it gave her the opportunity to talk to Auggie.
After The Show (p.247)
Why do you think Miranda felt so happy to be with Via’s family again? Do you think things will change between Via and Miranda? Why (not)?
Because she really loved them and she had missed them. They care for her more than her biological family. Things will probably change between Via and Miranda after this night because they will have the chance to talk and clear things up.
Nature Retreat (p.250)
Why is Auggie both nervous and excited to go on the retreat?
He’s nervous because he has never slept away from home before. I think he is excited because this is a chance for him to try something new and become more independent.
