Shooting Fundamentals

Objectives

  1. Understand the effective scoring distance (from where we are able to score).
  2. Practice dunking technique.

Requirements (Technique)

  1. Ball control (Hand-T placement).
  2. Balance (Feet apart, one foot slightly ahead on the shooting side).
  3. Focus on the rim.
  4. Orientation (Feet and shoulders aligned toward the basket).

Features (Execution)

  1. Ball trajectory (over 30 degrees).
  2. Maximum follow-through (Hand above the head, crossing from flexion to extension, arm fully extended).
  3. Low ball velocity (soft touch).

Coordination Points

  1. Push sequence (Foot, knee, hip, arms).
  2. Separate the non-dominant hand (off-hand).
  3. Lead with the dominant hand.

Off-Ball Movement Strategy

Objectives

  1. Facilitate passing the ball into open space, free of a defender.
  2. Inhibit defensive pressure on the player with the ball.
  3. Support the player with the ball.

Requirements

  1. Continuous movements (with stops and accelerations).
  2. Move with each pass.
  3. Move to create space for the player with the ball.
  4. Find or create a passing lane.
  5. Take useful space to score.

Features

  1. Balanced distribution in the space available.
  2. Rotate occupied spaces, individually and collectively.

Passing Techniques and Strategy

Objectives

  1. Advance the ball toward the opposite basket.
  2. Facilitate the next action for a teammate.
  3. Find new and/or better gaming options.
  4. Communication and exchange.

Requirements

  1. Balance.
  2. Maximum use of space.
  3. Focus attention on one target.
  4. Execute in the fewest possible moves.
  5. Be attentive to what happens on the pitch.

Features

  1. Pass trajectory as tight/direct as possible.
  2. Lead the receiver to facilitate reception and ball control.
  3. Ensure the recipient sees the ball path clearly for as long as possible.
  4. Pass with either hand.

Coordination Drills

  1. STEP - GO.
  2. POT (with one hand) - SKIP.
  3. GO (away) - SKIP.
  4. SKIP - SKIP.

Dribbling and Ball Handling Skills

Objectives

  1. Move towards the opposite basket.
  2. Find a better passing lane.
  3. Change the ball to another area of the court to continue the game.
  4. Get a better shooting position.
  5. Control the pace and speed of play.
  6. Maintain ball possession (24-second clock awareness).

Requirements

  1. Control the ball with both hands.
  2. Balance.
  3. Keep the ball away from the defender as much as possible.
  4. Orientation toward the basket.
  5. Dissociation of hip, shoulder, hand, and ball movement.
  6. Controlling the ball without looking at it (head up).

Features

  1. Dribble with the hand furthest from the defender.
  2. Vary the speed and direction of the dribble.
  3. Purposeful dribbling (driving toward the basket).
