Evaluation is the systematic process of determining the state of an object or the purpose of knowledge, information, and analysis. It involves gathering evidence to make informed judgments.
5 Stages of the Evaluation Process
- Definition of the Object of Evaluation and Assessment Criteria (What to Assess): Identify the object or situation you want to evaluate and establish the evaluation criteria.
- Evaluation Strategy Design (When and How): Develop a plan outlining who will conduct the evaluation, how it will be conducted, and when it will take place.
- Information, Data, and Evidence Collection: Gather relevant data and conduct the necessary analysis.
- Assessment Phase: Analyze the collected information to form judgments.
- Conclusions of the Assessment: Summarize the findings and draw conclusions based on the evaluation.
Assessment Types
- Depending on the Purpose:
- Formative: Focuses on improving the learning process.
- Summative: Measures overall achievement at the end of a learning period.
- According to the Information Collected:
- Quantitative: Uses numerical data.
- Qualitative: Relies on descriptive information.
- Mixed: Combines both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
- By Agent:
- Self-Evaluation: Individuals assess their own performance.
- External Evaluation: Conducted by someone other than the person being evaluated.
- Co-evaluation (Exchange): Involves peer assessment.
- Depending on the Situation:
- Nomothetic: Compares individuals to a larger group or standard.
- Ideographic: Focuses on the unique characteristics of an individual.
- Qualification Criteria:
- Norm-Referenced: Based on comparing individuals to a norm group.
- Criterion-Referenced: Based on predetermined criteria.
- At the Time:
- Beginning: Conducted at the start of a learning period.
- Process: Ongoing assessment during the learning process.
- End: Conducted at the conclusion of a learning period.
