Competitive Swimming Equipment and Setup

Starting Position

Where swimmers are placed before the race begins.

Buoys

Used for demarcating the lanes.

False Start Rope

Used to stop swimmers immediately following a false start signal.

Lane Flags (Backstroke Flags)

Flags suspended over the lane lines to signal swimmers (especially backstrokers) that they are approaching the end of the pool.

Signaling Lines (Lane Lines)

Indicate the middle of the lane and separate the lanes. They also help absorb waves.

Major Swimming Strokes

Crawl (Freestyle)

The fastest swimming stroke. It consists of a nearly circular, alternating motion of the arms (the stroke) combined with a flutter kick of the legs (the kick).

Breaststroke

This is an older style characterized by simultaneous, alternating movements where the legs open and close in a whip kick.

Backstroke

The only stroke performed entirely on the back. The technique is similar to the Crawl, but in an inverted position. It consists of alternating rotating arm movements combined with a flutter kick.

Butterfly

The most modern stroke. The powerful movement and physical demands make it the most spectacular swimming style. The movements are similar to those of a dolphin (the dolphin kick).

Aquatic Team Sports and Disciplines

Water Polo

A team sport similar to handball, where the objective is to score more goals than the opposing team.

Diving (The Falls)

An aesthetic sport involving both men and women, requiring mastery and perfection of movements in the air. There are two main categories:

  • Springboard Diving: Typically 1 meter or 3 meters.
  • Platform Diving: Ranging from 5.75 meters up to 10 meters.

Synchronized Swimming (Artistic Swimming)

A sport where the goal is to perform a choreography using various techniques and movements synchronized to the rhythm of the music. There are three main categories:

  • Solo
  • Duet (Duo)
  • Team (up to 8 members)

Attitudes, Values, and Norms in Aquatics

Participation requires basic equipment, maintaining clean water, and adherence to swimming etiquette.

Technique Improvement Drills

These drills help improve swimming technique:

  • Relays
  • Towing a partner
  • T-shirt relays (swimming while wearing a shirt)
  • Practicing specific movements (e.g., focusing on the Crawl stroke)
  • Swimming backward through the motions
  • Diving for and retrieving objects

Official Swimming Regulations

  • Minimum pool temperature must be 24 degrees Celsius.
  • A start is considered zero (false start) if a swimmer is in motion before the starting signal.
  • Swimmers who commit two false starts will be disqualified.
  • If a swimmer crosses into another lane, they will be disqualified.
  • Body contact with the touch pad marks the official arrival time.
  • The swimmer must touch the pool wall at each turn.
  • In relay races, the next swimmer cannot leave the starting block until their teammate touches the wall.
