Please review this questionnaire at home. Do not bring it on the day of the exam.
- All animals are:
- Autotrophs
- Which of these animals has radial symmetry?
- A sea anemone
- A butterfly
- A rabbit
- A snail
- An animal has bilateral symmetry if…
- One line can be drawn to divide the animal into halves that are mirror images.
- How does a cnidarian capture prey?
- By paralyzing prey with venom.
- How are coral reefs created?
- From the skeletons of dead corals.
- Which of these is a phylum of worms?
- Annelida
- Which of these characteristics is shared by all worms?
- They have a brain.
- Which of the following describes the feeding behavior of cnidarians?
- They are carnivores.
- The bodies of cnidarians have:
- Radial symmetry.
- What do earthworms do to soil?
- They make it more fertile with their wastes.
- Which of the following is true of all mollusks?
- They have soft bodies.
- Cephalopods move by:
- Using jet propulsion.
- Which of the following is a characteristic shared by all insects?
- One pair of antennae.
- Sound is produced when something begins to:
- Vibrate.
FWater enters a sponge through an opening called an osculum. PoreFCnidarians pull prey to their mouths with their stinging cells. Tentacles- T Coral reefs are built by cnidarians.
FA gastropod has two shells held together by hinges and strong muscles. BivalveFArachnids have six legs but no antennae. Eight- T Insects have three body parts and six legs.
- T Most insects are harmless to humans.
- T An insect that looks like a small adult when it hatches goes through gradual metamorphosis.
FIn order for a sound to be produced, some material, such as a rubber band or a cricket’s wing, must glow. VibrateFUsually it is a female insect that produces sound. Male- Many mollusks feed with a(n) radula, which scrapes food from a surface.
- The group of mollusks that has the most complex nervous system is cephalopods.
- An insect’s wings and legs are attached to the section of its body called the thorax.
- Some insects can spread microorganisms that cause diseases, such as malaria.
- During complete metamorphosis, an insect becomes a(n) pupa when it is enclosed in a protective covering.
Contrast the ways in which bilaterally symmetrical animals and radially symmetrical animals move. Explain how each kind of symmetry influences the way in which an animal moves.
Animals with radial symmetry generally do not move fast; since they do not have any distinct front end, they do not generally move forward in search of prey. In contrast, animals with bilateral symmetry can usually move more quickly than animals with radial symmetry, partly because their bodies are often streamlined. In addition, the bodies of bilaterally symmetrical animals have distinct front ends with sense organs in the head region; this adaptation enables them to move forward in search of prey.
