Transport Systems in Andalusia

According to the importance it gives to the transport network, the Plan includes objectives to:

  • Increase the presence of the railway.
  • Articulate the territory of Andalusia.
  • Move towards a sustainable transport system.
  • Enhance the impact of infrastructure on regional development.

Plan priorities

The Plan proposes a strategy with the following general priorities:

  • Prioritize the rail system and provide for high-speed transportation of passengers and goods.
  • Develop the road network to connect with national and European networks, connect cities, improve accessibility and develop public transport in metropolitan, coastal and inland areas.
  • In the port system, priority is given to strengthening commercial ports and providing links with road axes and rail.
  • In the airport system, it is considered important to connect high-capacity road and rail networks, particularly at Málaga Airport, given its importance for tourism.

Special Transport

In addition to conventional transport, other systems are becoming increasingly significant. We can classify them as:

  • Transport by pipeline — Pipelines that transport petroleum products from refineries to distribution centers and consumption inside the peninsula are of great significance. Pipelines can be of two types: those that form urban networks for home consumption and those that cross the country, supplied by natural gas that comes to Spain from North Africa or from Russia.
  • Postal systems — Use conventional means (road, rail, air, etc.). This group includes the transport of light goods and correspondence. Mail volumes have reached very high figures and today are characterized by the predominance of business correspondence.
  • Telecommunications — A new transport system that includes telegraph, telephone, television, teletext, fax, email, etc. It carries information and is transmitted in real time, i.e., without intervening time between transmission and reception of the message.
  • Transport of capital — Today this is not only the physical transportation of money but also, and especially, a series of movements resulting from purchase orders, sales or transfers.
