Muhammad was born in Mecca in Arabia. Muslims believe that an angel appeared to Muhammad and gave him a message from Allah. Some people did not agree with the message and wanted Muhammad killed. Muhammad went to Medina in 622. That marked the first year in the Islamic calendar. Later, Muhammad destroyed the idols at the Kaaba in Mecca.
The Quran teaches Muslims the Five Pillars of Islam. One pillar is to make a Hajj to Mecca. After Muhammad’s death, Islam continued to spread. Today, Islam is practiced around the world.

The Sui Dynasty had only two emperors. These emperors made the Chinese people work hard on Public Works, such as the Great Wall and the Grand Canal. In 617, the Tang Dynasty came to power. This dynasty kept the Mandate of Heaven for almost 300 years. Then in 960, the Song Dynasty took control of China. During this dynasty, the Chinese started using Gunpowder in weapons.

The Western Roman Empire fell in 476. But the Eastern Roman Empire continued. It became known as the Byzantine Empire. Under the rule of Justinian, the empire gained back some western lands.
There was little communication between Rome and Constantinople. Church leaders argued over the use of icons and other issues. The church split in two. The church in the West became known as the Catholic Church. The church in the East became known as the Orthodox Church.
