The Rise of Great River Civilizations

In ancient times, rivers were the lifelines upon which humans depended. China, Egypt, Babylon, and India all originated from great river basins, belonging to the great river civilizations. Mesopotamia is the ancient Greek name for the land of the two rivers, meaning “the place between the rivers.” These two rivers refer to the Euphrates and Tigris. The ancient civilization that was created and developed on these plains is called the Mesopotamian civilization.

The Legacy of Mesopotamia

As early as 3200 BC, the Sumerians created cuneiform writing, which is the earliest text in the world. In mathematics, the ancient Babylonians were computational scientists with high skills. Regarding architecture, many majestic and magnificent buildings were constructed during the Mesopotamian civilization. As is widely known, the city of Babylon fully reflects the development of civilization and human wisdom at that time.

Innovations in Writing and Law

Similarly, the Hammurabi Code, which was enacted in the 18th century BC, is the first systematic and complete written code in the world, and its legislative techniques have had a great influence on history.

The Wonders of Ancient Egypt

The Egyptian civilization was born in the same period as the Mesopotamian civilization, but it does not belong to it. The Egyptians developed their own writing and mythological systems. Ancient Egypt was located in the middle and lower reaches of the Nile River in northeastern Africa. The geographical location of ancient Egypt brought various convenient conditions and influences to the region.

Science, Medicine, and the Afterlife

The regular flooding of the Nile brought fertile, soft soil, which provided superior conditions for the growth of crops. Similarly, ancient Egypt's science and technology were highly developed, including:

  • Calendars: Through the observation of astrology and the measurement of Nile water levels, the ancient Egyptians discovered the relationship between the fluctuations of the Nile and the stars, producing the earliest calendar.
  • Medicine: Developed during the process of making mummies.
  • Mathematics: Produced through long-term practice in land measurement and Nile water level measurement.

In terms of religion, the ancient Egyptians believed that the world has no beginning and no end; everything is in a cycle, and people possess a future life.

This highlights the fundamental differences between the Egyptian civilization and the Mesopotamian civilization.
