Step 5: Individual Defense in Midfield and Attack

  • This phase is integrated into the Second Phase of global learning consolidation and initiation of specific learning.
  • Starting handball at age 7 leads to the expansion of the playing space.
  • Control of the attack requires broader tactical domains and intentionality. We reduce the gap between defenders to facilitate mutual support.

Content Focus

The content covers generic individual technique and tactics (similar to Phase 4), progressively increasing the technical demands of execution.

Specific Content

Defenders

  • Increase defensive density in areas closer to the offensive culmination (Third Principle: Goal Protection). This enhances defensive cooperation opportunities.
  • Defender of the Ball Carrier: Harassment, particularly intense near the 6-meter line.
  • Defender of the Non-Ball Carrier:
    • Combining intentions (intercept, deter).
    • Prevent future unchecking (do not lose sight of the opponent).
    • Help (cover and fold): "Watch your back" for a fellow defender.

Attackers

  • The proximity of the defense necessitates improved accuracy and adjustment in movement, passing, and receiving.
  • Support from teammates and effective unchecking to gain advantage over distant defenders.
  • Coordinated back-and-forth unchecking between players (e.g., when one player unchecks deep, a contiguous teammate responds with an advanced support uncheck, exchanging positions).
  • This introduces the basic tactical offensive procedure of "go and go" (give and go), and can introduce the concept of the "lock" (associated with organized unchecking).

Organizational Guidelines and Training Construction

  • Combine individual criteria for defensive pairing (balancing skills) and proximity (focusing on players nearest to the end of the phase).
  • Encourage close collaboration between defenders (basic tactical procedures), including granting space and changing opponents.
  • Insist on multi-skilling (no specific positions, except for initial goalkeeper selection).
  • Introduce the concept of the counter-attack (facilitated by the absence of opponents in the offensive half).

Individual Domain Work

  • Focus on all technical elements, qualified by situations created by the defense in the midfield. Require high speed of execution rather than executive perfection, as the game occurs in close proximity.

Exercise Construction and Usage

  • Act under time pressure, minimizing response time.
  • Decrease spaces, increasing opponent proximity.
  • Use 2v2 or 4v4 clashes, with specific targets for attackers and defenders.
  • Prioritize chained technical actions.
  • Encourage the use of peripheral vision.

Games and Matches

  • Regulations remain an educational element, adjustable based on game and learning objectives.
  • All players rotate through all positions (excluding specialized goalkeepers).
  • Participation in regular competition is required.
