Understanding Heterosexuality

Heterosexuality is a sexual orientation characterized by sexual attraction, love, or sexual desire for people of the opposite sex. This contrasts with homosexuality and is usually distinguished from bisexuality.

Besides referring to sexual orientation, the term heterosexual also refers to sexual behavior between individuals of the opposite sex. Many animal species (those that engage in sexual reproduction and internal fertilization), including humans, reproduce through heterosexual sex. This is unlike hermaphroditic species, in which all individuals possess both sexes.

Homosexuality

Homosexuality (from the Greek ομος, homo, meaning 'equal', and the Latin sexus, meaning 'sex') is a sexual orientation defined... Continue reading "Understanding Heterosexuality and Related Sexual Practices" »

Kant's Life in Historical Context

Kant lived in Prussia during the reign of Frederick the Great, the "philosopher king," whose form of government was enlightened despotism - "everything for the people, without the people" - with its promotion of social reforms. Internationally, momentous historical events occurred, such as the independence of the United States and its Constitution's proclamation, and the French Revolution (1789) - and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, which are the basis of the modern liberal sociocultural democratic framework. Socially, a crisis occurred between the aristocratic and hierarchical class society of the Old Regime and the triumphant bourgeoisie of the French Revolution. These were the main actors... The Novecentismo Novel: Gabriel Miró and Ramón Pérez de Ayala

The novelists of the Generation of '14 can be split into two lines: those continuing narrative modes of earlier stages, such as Concha Espina and Ricardo León, and those seeking renewal, such as Miró and Pérez de Ayala. Other authors are Fernández Flórez, a master of the comic novel, and Benjamín Jarnés, who reduces the action to a minimum. These authors have in common the overcoming of narrative and stylistic patterns of Realism, though they follow different paths: one through lyricism; another through irony and humor; in other cases, through the intellectualism of the approach; and sometimes by means of dehumanization, which meant the "lack of interest in human vicissitude"... The Middle East Conflict and Cold War Context

The proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948 led to the first war with Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, who did not accept the existence of Israel at the expense of Palestine. This period saw the founding of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Key Arab-Israeli Wars

The Second Arab-Israeli War (1956) occurred during the Suez Crisis, following an Israeli attack on Egypt. The Third Arab-Israeli War (1967), known as the Six-Day War, involved Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Israel responded rapidly with its troops under the command of Moshe Dayan. The Fourth Arab-Israeli War (1973) broke out during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, hence its name, the Yom Kippur War. Egypt and Syria launched a surprise... Interpretation of Treaties

Interpreting a treaty involves determining the meaning and scope of its provisions and clarifying any obscure or ambiguous points. The fundamental principle of interpretation is found in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, specifically Article 31. This article states that a treaty shall be interpreted in good faith in accordance with the ordinary meaning to be given to the terms of the treaty in their context and considering its object and purpose.

Article 31 also specifies that the context for interpretation includes:

  1. Any subsequent agreement between the parties regarding the treaty's interpretation or the application of its provisions.
  2. Any subsequent practice in the application of the treaty which establishes

Understanding Ship Stability and Maritime Forces

Center of Buoyancy

The center of buoyancy is the center of gravity of the volume of water displaced by a float for a given condition. Also known as the center of thrust, as it is, for the purpose of stability, which regards the force applied. It is represented by the letter C and in some publications with the letter B to equate the "Center of Buoyancy" of English.

Since the ship moves in waves, the position of the center of buoyancy is variable and depends on the hull shape and volume submerged at that time. The curve in the transverse plane that describes the center of buoyancy for different angles of rocking is called the curve, and its center of buoyancy ray radii.

Transverse Metacentric

Since by definition the metacenter is in the vertical... Continue reading "Understanding Ship Stability and Maritime Forces" »

Data, Information, and Network Communication Essentials

Data

Data is the collection of facts considered in isolation. It describes an organization and carries meaning, but generally is not useful by itself.

Information

Information is data that has been manipulated and is useful to someone. Information must have value; otherwise, it would be considered just data. Information tells people something that confirms what they knew or suspected. (What, who, and when?)

Why? Because telecommunication networks transmit data, the networks do not identify meanings (information). The objective of networking is to take data from one place to another.

  • Digital: Discrete
