Christopher's Discovery and Investigation

Christopher, a fifteen-year-old boy with autism, lives with his father after his mother's supposed death two years prior. He discovers the dead body of his neighbor's dog, Wellington, and becomes a suspect. After being briefly arrested, he decides to investigate the dog's death despite his father's objections. His investigation is hampered by his fears and difficulties interpreting the world around him. He records his experiences in a book, creating a "murder mystery novel." During his investigation, he learns from Mrs. Alexander that his mother had an affair with Mr. Shears.

The Truth Revealed

Christopher's father, Ed, discovers the book and confiscates it. Christopher then finds letters from his mother, dated after her supposed death, revealing that she is still alive. Shocked by his father's lies, Christopher becomes physically ill. Ed confesses to killing Wellington in a fit of anger after an argument with Mrs. Shears.

Journey to London

Fearing for his safety, Christopher runs away to London, guided by his mother's address from the letters. He endures a challenging journey, overwhelmed by the crowds and stimuli, but eventually finds his mother living with Mr. Shears.

Reunion and Aftermath

Christopher's mother, Judy, is overjoyed to see him. Mr. Shears, however, is unhappy with Christopher's arrival. Christopher decides to return to Swindon to take his A-level mathematics exam. Judy leaves Mr. Shears and moves to Swindon. After an argument with Ed, she agrees to let him see Christopher for brief visits. Christopher remains terrified of his father and hopes he will be imprisoned for killing Wellington.

A New Beginning

Ed gets Christopher a new dog and promises to rebuild trust. Christopher completes his mathematics A-level with top grades and aspires to become a scientist. The book ends with Christopher optimistic about his future, having solved the mystery, traveled to London, found his mother, written a book, and succeeded in his exam.
