Mechanical and Electrical Power Systems: Principles and Components

DC Generator

Principle

A DC generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a conductor moves in a magnetic field and cuts magnetic flux, an electromotive force is induced in it. Thus, a DC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Construction

The main parts of a DC generator are the yoke, pole core, field winding, armature core, armature winding, commutator, and brushes. The yoke provides mechanical support, while the field windings produce the magnetic field. The armature consists of conductors where the voltage is induced. The commutator and brushes help in collecting the generated current and supplying it to the external circuit as direct current. The impeller and casing are designed to minimize energy...

Diesel Engine Mechanics: Valve Timing, Combustion, and Turbocharging

Technology2.9 KB

Valve Overlap

Valve overlap occurs when both intake and exhaust valves are open simultaneously. The duration of this overlap depends on engine characteristics and the RPM at which maximum power is developed. As engine RPM increases, the time available for gas exchange decreases, necessitating larger valve opening angles. High-performance engines utilize a broad valve overlap angle to ensure sufficient cylinder filling at high RPM.

Diesel Engine Features

In a diesel engine, only air is introduced during the intake stroke. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, where ignition occurs upon contact with air that has reached a high temperature due to strong compression.

Diesel Fuel Properties

  • Density: 0.81 to 0.85 kg/L at 15°C.
  • Calorific

Pop!_OS Keyboard Shortcuts: Master Your Workflow

Technology4.24 KB

Super Key

Super is the OS key on your keyboard; if you're using a System76 computer, it's the Ubuntu key. On a computer that came with Windows, it's the Windows key. On a Mac, it's the Command key.

In Pop!_OS, Super handles the majority of OS and window actions.

Primary Actions

Tapping Super on its own brings up the Activities overview, which is the core way of launching apps and managing your workflow.

Super + ↑/↓ switch workspaces up and down. Ctrl + Super + ←/→ tile windows to the left and right of your display. Super + Tab quickly switches between your open windows.

All Shortcuts

Window & Workspace Management

Windows can be switched between, moved around, tiled, and closed all with the keyboard. Shift acts as a modifier that lets you...
