Material Science Fundamentals: Properties and Classifications

Technology4.07 KB

Material Science Fundamentals

Metals (M)

Chemical elements with low electronegativity, few valence electrons, and outer layers that are easily shared. They are typically malleable and ductile, and are good conductors of heat and electricity.

Alloys (A)

Mixtures of metals and non-metals (or other metals) designed to improve mechanical properties, although they often result in a lower melting point. They are good drivers of electricity.

  • Malleable, ductile, and high resistance.
  • MiAF: Iron alloys (e.g., steel) prices. Fe (Iron) is tough, malleable, ferromagnetic, and forms carbon steel.
  • MiAnF: Copper alloys, resistant, used in drivers, cobalt alloys.
  • Supral: Aluminum alloys, corrosion-resistant and resistant to light (Al-Ti-Be).

Polymers (MP)

Organic materials...

Ferrous Metals: Types, Properties, and Steelmaking Processes

Technology2.24 KB

Types of Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals are primarily industrial iron, steel, and cast iron.

Industrial Iron

Industrial iron has a low carbon content and inadequate mechanical characteristics, making it rarely used in industries.

Steel

Steels are ductile and malleable. Mechanical strength, hardness, and brittleness increase with carbon content, while weldability decreases with the percentage of carbon. Steel is also prone to rust. There are two main types of steels: carbon steels (those with low content of other elements) and alloy steels (containing other elements).

Various elements communicate a range of properties to steel. These include sulfur, cobalt, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, silicon, vanadium, and tungsten.

Cast Iron

Casting...

Electrical Generators: Technical Specifications and Power Calculations

Technology8.85 KB

Electrical Generator Voltage Classifications

Generators are categorized by their voltage output:

  • High Voltage: 3kV, 6kV, 10kV, 15kV
  • Standard Voltage: 50V–500V
  • Special Voltage: 500V–1000V
  • Very Low Voltage: <50V (via transformer)

Alternating Current and Engine Types

Generators are classified by phase (biphasic and triphasic) and require an alternator paired with an engine:

  • Gasoline: Standard generators
  • Diesel: GE (Generator Sets)
  • Gas: Large-scale installations

Generator Components and Control Systems

A standard generator assembly includes:

  • Safety: Earth connection and 30mA differential protection.
  • Control Cabinet:
    • Top Box: Ammeter, voltmeter, frequency meter, differential, and emergency stop.
    • Lower Cabinet: Terminal board and fast connections (Schuko-
