C. Thomsen's Classification of Materials and Historical Ages

C. Thomsen classified materials and historical ages: Stone Age (Paleolithic, Neolithic), Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age. Other materials include wood, bone, ceramics, and leather.

Types of Materials

  • Natural (e.g., wood, marble, granite)
  • Artificial (created by changing natural materials)
  • Synthetic (created in laboratories)

Historical Use of Materials

  1. New needs lead to new materials.
  2. New materials lead to new scientific discoveries.
  3. Major discoveries of natural materials lead to further development of artificial materials.
  4. Conflicts and wars arise over the control of natural resources.
  5. Artificial materials evolve significantly during wartime.

Hydro-Electric Power Plants: Classification, Components, and Operation

Technology149.18 KB

Hydro-Electric Power Plant

Classification of Hydro-Electric Power Plants

According to the Availability of Head:

  1. Low head plants - head below 30 m
  2. Medium head plants - head between 30 m to 180 m
  3. High head plants - head 180 m and above.

According to the Nature of Load:

  1. Base load plant
  2. Peak load plant.

According to the Quantity of Water Available:

  1. Run-off river plant without pondage.
  2. Storage reservoir plant
  3. Pump storage plant.

Such a plant has a large storage capacity of water; therefore, water collected in the rainy season is utilized during the dry period of the year.

The collection of water is done on a yearly basis; therefore, the capacity of the reservoir required is extremely large compared with the other types of hydroelectric power plants.

Elements of

Fundamental Database Structure and Functions

Database Relationships and Table Tools

Database Relationships: The Three Types

The three types of relationships that can be created are: one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many.

Defining an Advanced Table

An advanced table is the fastest template that satisfies your needs when starting a database.

SUM vs. COUNT Aggregate Functions

The SUM function adds the numerical elements of a column, while the COUNT function counts the total number of elements (records) in a column.

Purpose of the Standard Deviation Function

The standard deviation function provides a measure of the dispersion or variability of data from the mean (average).

What is the Table Analyzer?

The Table Analyzer is an assistant that examines a...

Machine Elements: Flywheels, Clutches, Bearings, and Brakes

Technology3.06 KB

Flywheel Functionality

A flywheel counteracts irregular movements. When irregularities occur, the flywheel helps achieve a more uniform rotation in the machine's output shaft.

Coefficient of Fluctuation in Rotating Shafts

The coefficient of fluctuation is the angular speed difference between the average angular velocities, expressed as (wf - wo) / wm.

Types of Clutches

  • Friction Clutches
  • Tooth Clutches
  • Single-Disk Clutches
  • Hydraulic Clutches

Hydraulic Clutch vs. Friction Clutch

A hydraulic clutch comprises two turbines and transmits motion using the momentum of oil at high speeds. It operates automatically without requiring any manual input. In contrast, a friction clutch requires a series of actions for proper operation.

Types of Springs

  • Tension and Compression

Natural, Synthetic, and Artificial Polymers: Properties and Uses

Technology2.74 KB

Natural, Synthetic, and Artificial Polymers

A polymer is a macromolecule composed of long strings, where a smaller molecular unit, known as a monomer, is repeated. It is a typical type of structure of organic compounds, formed by the union of monomers, which are carbon compounds, hydrogen, and other radicals, with the ability of carbon to establish bonds between their atoms.

  • Natural polymers: proteins, nucleic acids, lignin, chitin, and rubber.
  • Synthetic polymers: nylon, polystyrene, polyester, PVC.
  • Artificial polymers: rayon, nitrocellulose, and vulcanized rubber.

PVC and Wood: Properties and Uses

PVC

PVC is a thermoplastic polymer that comes in two varieties:

  • Rigid: used for structural elements of construction such as door frames, windows, and pipes.

Types of Silkworm Mountages for High-Quality Cocoon Production

Technology2.32 KB

Understanding Silkworm Mountages

Mountage, also known as cocoonage, is the most critical device used to support silkworms during the spinning of their cocoons.

Chandrika Mountage

The Chandrika is a round or rectangular mountage formed of a bamboo mat supported by split bamboo reapers on all sides. Bamboo strips are fixed in a spiral or circular pattern on the mats. Approximately 1,000 worms can be mounted on a single unit. These mountages offer several advantages, including ease of handling, repairability, and the production of high-quality cocoons.

Screen-Type Mountage

The Screen-type mountage is made of bamboo, wood, or plastic reapers featuring longitudinal strips with triangular peaks. These are highly portable, foldable, and require minimal...
