Process Control and Instrumentation Principles

Design and Engineering15.4 KB

Fundamentals of Process Control

(i) What is a manipulated variable? Give one example.

Answer: A manipulated variable is a variable that can be adjusted to maintain the desired output of a process. Example: Valve position in a temperature control loop.

(ii) The range of an industrial bimetallic thermometer is:

Answer: -50°C to 500°C.

(iii) What information is gathered from Bode diagrams?

Answer: Magnitude and phase shift of a system across frequencies—used to analyze system stability and frequency response.

(iv) Degrees of freedom for binary distillation:

Answer: For a constant pressure binary distillation process, the degrees of freedom are calculated as: Degrees of freedom = Number of components - Number of phases + 2 - Number of fixed variables....

Determining Normal Consistency of Cement: Standard Procedure

Design and Engineering94.42 KB

Experiment No. 1: Normal Consistency of Cement

Objective

To determine the normal consistency of a given sample of cement.

Apparatus

  • Vicat apparatus (conforming to IS: 5513-1976)
  • Balance
  • Gauging trowel
  • Stopwatch

Theory

To determine the initial setting time, final setting time, soundness, and strength of cement, a parameter known as standard consistency must be used. The standard consistency of a cement paste is defined as the consistency that permits a Vicat plunger (10 mm diameter and 50 mm length) to penetrate to a depth of 33–35 mm from the top of the mould.

Procedure

  1. The standard consistency of a cement paste is defined as the consistency that permits the Vicat plunger to penetrate to a point 5 to 7 mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould.
  2. Initially,

Digital Switching Systems: Space, Time & Signalling Systems

Design and Engineering4.07 KB

31 Digital Switching Systems — Space Switching

Types and characteristics of space switching network

The space switching network operates with inputs and outputs organized in N time slots. Information from input time slots is routed from every input mux to a specific output mux without modification of the time position. Gates in crossbars are opened only for the duration of the corresponding time slot.

  • Time slots: The network works at inputs and outputs with N time slots.
  • Routing: Information of input time slots is routed from each input mux to a specific output mux without changing the time position.
  • Crossbar gates: Gates in crossbars are opened only for the period of the time slot.
  • Eight-bit words: Eight-bit words are carried through the space

Java Network Optimization: Source Routing and Link Capacity Design

Design and Engineering3.31 KB

Network Optimization with Source Routing in Java

The following Java code configures source routing, creates links between all node pairs, and solves a cost minimization problem using GLPK.

Source Routing and Link Creation

netPlan.setRoutingType(RoutingType.SOURCE_ROUTING);
for (Node n1 : netPlan.getNodes())
{
    for (Node n2 : netPlan.getNodes())
    {
        if (n1 != n2)
        {
            netPlan.addLink(n1, n2, 0, netPlan.getNodePairEuclideanDistance(n1, n2), 200000, null);
        }
    }
}
final int D = netPlan.getNumberOfDemands();
final int E = netPlan.getNumberOfLinks();

Decision Variables

op.addDecisionVariable("z_e", false, new int[]{1, E}, 0, Double.MAX_VALUE); /* variable for each existing link, we need to know the number of these

Inspecting Springs and Wheel Bearings for Corrosion, Overheating and Wear

Design and Engineering2.99 KB

Spring Inspection Procedures

It is essential that any exposed springs are carefully inspected for evidence of corrosion or overheating. Corrosion typically develops on static springs and reduces their load-carrying capability. When a spring subjected to cyclic loading becomes corroded, the combined effects of fatigue and corrosion result in a significant reduction in fatigue strength.

Overheating can be identified by blistering or deterioration of the surface protective coating and, in severe cases, by a discoloration of the metal caused by loss of temper. If overheating is detected, the spring must be considered unserviceable for its intended function.

Springs must be checked in accordance with specified figures or graphs. Some inspections are...
