Material Properties and Industrial Equipment Terminology

Key Material Properties and Mechanical Resistance

Hardness is the measure of how resistant solid matter is to various kinds of permanent shape change when a force is applied.

Strength is the ability to withstand forces without permanent change (e.g., breakage). Hardness is one type of strength, just like tensile and compressive strength.

The toughness of a material is the maximum amount of energy it can absorb before fracturing, which is different from the amount of force that can be applied.

Stiffness is the extent to which an object resists deformation in response to an applied force. The opposite of stiffness is elasticity—how far an object will stretch when pulled with a given amount of force.

  • Hardness: Measures the pressure needed to cause

Technical Processes: Tunnel Boring, Diesel Engines, and Corrosion Control

Technology2.77 KB

Tunnel Boring Process

  1. Cutting the Rock Surface. The face of the cutter rotates about seven times a minute, and the teeth cut large circles into the surface of the rock.
  2. Collecting the Rocks. Pieces of the rock fall to the ground, and when the cutter face rotates upwards, the rocks fall onto conveyor belts.
  3. Moving the Cutter. Hydraulic cylinders push the body of the cutter slowly forwards. The steel shoes move outwards and grip the tunnel walls, while two legs push down and lift the machine off the floor.
  4. Supplying the Electricity. The power is connected to the cutters by means of a 13,800-volt cable.
  5. Strengthening the Roof. When the machine moves forwards, holes are drilled into the roof of the tunnel, and then the holes are filled with bolts and

Drainage, Water, and Gas Systems in Homes: Essential Components

Technology3.4 KB

Elements of the Drainage Network

  • Siphons: Allow wastewater to be evacuated and prevent odors from entering homes.

  • Connections: A set of horizontal pipes that connect the various sanitary fixtures with downpipes.

  • Downpipes: Vertical pipes that collect water from connections, toilets, and roofs.

  • Collectors: These are the horizontal pipes buried in the ground that connect to the downpipes, channeling water to the siphonal chamber.

  • Siphonal chamber: Provides a hydraulic closure and prevents odors and sewer rats from entering the drains in the houses.

The Water Bill

Specifies what we pay for the service and consumption of water in a given period.

  • Service Fee: The fixed fee entitles you to consume water.

  • Consumption: The variable amount billed.

  • Taxes:

Computer Hardware and Usage: Q&A

Basic Computer Knowledge

  1. What is a Bus?

A bus is a device that determines how much data can be transmitted.
  2. What Does She Look Like?

She is beautiful, medium tall, with brown hair.
  3. How Tall Are You?

I am tall, one meter and seventy-four centimeters.
  4. What is a Motherboard?

The motherboard is the hub used to connect all the essential components of a computer.

Input and Output Devices

5) Define input and output device

An input device is a peripheral used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system.

An output device is any piece of computer hardware used to communicate the results of data processing.

RAM vs. ROM

6) What is the difference between ROM and RAM?

ROM: Access to memory information...

Core Concepts of Information Systems and Digital Technologies

Technology2.43 KB

Definition of Information Systems

An information system can be defined technically as a set of interrelated components that collect, process, store, and distribute information to support decision-making, coordination, and control.

Definition of the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects are connected to the internet and are able to identify themselves to other devices.

Relation Between Cloud Computing and E-business

To run an e-business, the support of cloud computing is essential. Main business processes are hosted online, and cloud computing helps manage organizational technology through the internet.

Aquifers, Hydrostatic Pressure, and Hydraulic Systems

Technology4.13 KB

What is an Aquifer and How Does it Relate to Hydrostatic Pressure?

An aquifer is a geological formation capable of storing and transmitting water through its pores and cracks, making it hydraulically usable. Aquifers are classified based on their hydrostatic pressure:

  • Free Aquifer: The free surface of the water is below the ceiling of the aquifer, so it is at atmospheric pressure.
  • Confined Aquifer: The water is above atmospheric pressure, filling all the pores. When the roof of the aquifer is pierced, the water rises to reach a hydrostatic equilibrium.
  • Leaky Aquifer: A type of confined aquifer where the wall and/or ceiling are semipermeable, acting as an aquitard.

An aquitard is a geological formation that contains water but transmits it very slowly....

Semiconductor Fundamentals and Integrated Circuit Technology

Technology3.09 KB

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

LEDs function through a complex chemical process where electrons emit photons as they return to their valence orbits.

Types of Electronic Components and Circuits

Discrete Devices

Discrete devices are electronic components manufactured separately with wire leads for connection to a full circuit. These components are typically installed on printed circuit boards alongside other electronic elements.

Monolithic Integrated Circuits

In a monolithic integrated circuit, all circuit components are contained within a single silicon chip. The conductors and insulators are formed through chemical gas reactions and the deposition of metals such as aluminum.

Digital Integrated Circuits

Digital integrated circuits produce signals with...
