Internet Fundamentals: Connectivity and Protocols

Technology3.53 KB

Understanding the Internet

The Internet is known and loved by everyone (except those who are still waiting for something to download) and it is the biggest growth area in technology at the moment. The Internet is an international network of computers.

It is basically a very big Wide Area Network of computers. It was originally developed by the U.S. Government to improve communication between its military computers. In the beginning, only government "think tanks" and a few universities were linked. It was an emergency military communications system.

How the Internet Functions

  1. Most people access the Internet using a PC connected to a normal telephone line. Computers are attached to a telephone line via another piece of kit called an ADSL modem or

Understanding Systems Theory: Core Concepts and Dynamics

Technology2.4 KB

Definition of a System

A system is an organized set of interacting, interdependent parts that form a complex, unitary whole.

Core Components of a System

  • Inputs: The resources entering the system, such as materials, human resources, or information.
  • Processes: The mechanisms that transform inputs into outputs, including machines, individuals, computers, or specific organizational tasks.
  • Outputs: The results obtained from processing, which may take the form of products, services, or information.

System Relationships

Systems interact through various relationship types:

  • Symbiotic: Systems that rely on each other to operate. This includes parasitic relationships (one system depends on another) and mutual relationships (both systems are interdependent).
  • Synergic:

Advanced Composite Materials: Fiber-Reinforced and Laminar Structures

Technology2.09 KB

Fiber-Reinforced Systems

Reinforced Concrete: A dual compound formed by cement and gravel, reinforced with steel rods.

Tires: Steel wire is utilized to reinforce rubber during tire manufacturing, significantly improving strength and extending product lifespan.

Fiberglass: Contains glass fibers within a polymer matrix, such as polyester. These fibers, which may be short, roped, or woven, enhance the strength and stiffness of the polymer, resulting in properties comparable to high-quality metals and alloys.

Laminar Composites

Laminar composites include thin coatings, protective surfaces, bimetallic elements, and laminates. These materials are often designed to improve strength, reduce weight, or increase wear resistance. Manufacturing processes include...

Essential Linux Commands for File and System Management

Technology2.65 KB

More Commands to Query the System

The chmod Command

This command is used to modify file permissions. There are two primary ways of using it:

  • Octal (Numeric) Notation: chmod 777 myfile
  • Symbolic Notation: chmod g+x myfile

In the first case, we set permissions using the octal form, while in the second, we use symbolic notation. In the example, we add the execute permission (x) to the group (g) owning the file. We can use + to add or - to remove permissions for different classes:

  • u: User (owner)
  • g: Group
  • o: Others

These are followed by the permission type: r (read), w (write), or x (execute).

The chown Command

This command is used to change the owner of a file and can be used as follows:

chown -R new_owner /path/to/file

The chgrp Command

The chgrp command changes...

Stationary Loading Machines: Dragline and Excavator Operations

Technology2.71 KB

Item 12: Stationary Loading Machines

1. What is a dragline and what is its function?

The dragline is a stationary loading machine consisting of a bucket (dipper or spoon) that is released and controlled by cables to collect earth. After the collection process, the bucket is suspended, allowing the operator to rotate the machine and deposit the load at any position within the reach of the boom.

2. Dragline terminology and components

Also known as a dragline excavator, its primary components include:

  • Chassis
  • Movement systems (caterpillars or crutches)
  • Boom base
  • Boom head pulley
  • Bucket (spoon)
  • Cables

3. Difference between shovel and backhoe

The primary difference lies in the level of excavation:

  • Shovel: Collects material above the level of its caterpillars.

Bicycle Design: Conventional vs. Improvements

  • Conventional: Spoke wheels — Improvement: Disc wheels
  • Conventional: Gear lever on the frame — Improvement: Combined gear change and brake
  • Conventional: Tubular aluminium-alloy frame — Improvement: Carbon fibre frame
  • Conventional: Pedals with toe-clips — Improvement: Clipless pedals

Understanding IoT: Components, Applications, and Future

Technology3.41 KB

What is IoT?

Before 2010, people connected to the internet in what was called the 'Internet of People,' connecting people to apps and to other people.
In IoT 2020, people are connected to the internet, things are connected to the internet, and things are connected to things, connecting things to apps, to other things, and things to people.
IoT is about reusing the Internet Infrastructure and Technologies to connect things.
IoT is the combination of existing technologies + new opportunities + marketing and business.

Embedded Systems

Embedded systems are a combination of hardware and software that complete a specific task. Generally, they are parts of a machine and provide real-time operations with low power consumption, small size, safety, reliability,

Material Testing Methods and Standards Explained

Technology2.69 KB

Material Mechanical Testing Methods

Static Tests: Test tensile, compression, bending, twisting, shearing, and wear.

Dynamic Tests: Dynamic bending tests, compression, and tension.

Fatigue Testing: Testing by bending, compression, and the combination of tensile tests.

Key Testing Features

Compression Testing

Undergo the body on the action of two forces in opposite directions and on the same line of action or direction, tending to compress the molecules in the body. Examples include cement, concrete, masonry units, and wood.

Tension (Tensile) Testing

Submit the body to the action of two forces in opposite directions and in the same line of action and direction, tending to stretch or separate the molecules in the body. This test is used for steel, wood,

Understanding Hard Drive Technology and Evolution

Technology3.15 KB

Hard Disk Drives: Core Concepts and Evolution

Definition of a Hard Drive

A hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile storage device capable of storing large amounts of digital data quickly and securely. Digital data is encoded in the form of magnetic pulses.

How Hard Drives Operate

  1. A hard drive consists of one or more aluminum or glass platters coated with a layer of material possessing magnetic properties on either side.
  2. While ferric oxide coatings were once common, cobalt or other advanced materials are currently employed for improved performance.
  3. The platters are typically sized depending on the hard drive's form factor.
  4. Not long ago, hard drives featured 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch platters. Today, most desktop hard drives incorporate 3.5-inch platters.

Outside Plant Infrastructure: Components and Systems

Technology2.19 KB

Elements of Outside Plant

Outside plant infrastructure encompasses all support systems necessary to identify, nurture, and protect communication streams. These elements are divided into three primary parts:

  • Channeling: Consists of civil works, including pipelines, conduits, and inspection chambers.
  • Lines: The physical network constituted by poles, cable laying, anchors, and support hardware.
  • Connection: The union of cables, including terminal box distribution, network maintenance, transfer protection, joints, and adherence to work standards.

Telephone Exchanges

These buildings house transmission and switching equipment that enable communication between subscribers. They also contain power supply equipment and the Main Distribution Frame (MDF).
