TRADE
Internal Trade
Internal trade in Spain is characterized by the following features:

Key Features of Internal Trade

1. Location and Transport

a) Its location depends on the existence of a transport system between producers, traders, and consumers, as well as the existence of a broad consumer market with adequate purchasing power. Both factors contribute to urban neighborhoods and communities with good transport networks (Madrid, Catalonia) and negatively impact neighborhoods and communities with lower economic development (Castilla La Mancha).

2. Structural Changes

b) Its structure has undergone profound changes over recent years (commercial revolution). These changes have affected the distribution channels for consumers (higher purchasing capacity due to increased income, declining purchase frequency due to the incorporation of women into the workforce, etc.), distribution (sales in supermarkets), equipment (optical bar code scanners), and payment methods (credit cards).

3. Types of Trade

c) By type, we can distinguish between:

  • Wholesale: Focused on production and distribution in retailing for central locations of production and consumption (Madrid, Andalusia).
  • Retail: Sold directly to consumers, contrasting traditional trade with modern trade.

Traditional Trade

Traditional trade consists of small establishments in old buildings, targeted at individual entrepreneurs, with a small staff and almost always family-run. The equipment is outdated due to a lack of capital. These characteristics explain the crisis, despite its advantages (personal care and immediate access).

New Commercial Forms

New commercial forms include supermarkets, which are highlighted by department stores in inner cities (at least 4000 m² and references 5000+), selling all kinds of goods, except very specialized items, distributed by sections and integrated shopping centers that combine shops, leisure establishments, and hypermarkets.

4. Commercial Areas

d) Commercial areas are geographical spaces where the population goes to a town to purchase important goods that are not needed immediately.

5. Spanish Trade Policy

e) The Spanish trade policy has two basic tools:

  • Framework Plan for Modernization of the Internal Trade (1995): Aims to increase the competitiveness of retail trade by improving professional skills and technological modernization.
  • Retail Trade Act (1996): Implements the liberalization of business premises, regulating various aspects of liberalizing trade and opening times, while taking into account the laws established by the autonomous communities.
