Item 13. The Balance of Payments.
The current account, or merchandise trade balance: This includes the export and import of goods, excluding insurance. When a country exports a good, it increases the gross national disposable income for productive factors resident in the country. When goods are imported, gross national income is reduced.

  • Account Services: Includes non-tangible product transactions and payments for the use of intangible assets. A surplus occurs when a country exports more services than it imports. The Spanish economy groups all service operations into tourism and other services.
  • Income Accounts: Records financial capital income obtained in a country other than the owner's residence, as well as labor income obtained by individuals residing in a country other than their place of employment. It also includes payments for these items to foreign residents. Income received by residents from working abroad drives gross national disposable income, while payments to nonresidents decrease it.
  • Current Transfers: Includes all transactions with no direct economic return. Revenues generated by increases in current transfers received increase gross national disposable income, and decreases reduce it.

The current account balance is the sum of the balances of goods, services, income, and transfers. A current account surplus increases assets held by outsiders, meaning the economy is providing funds to the rest of the world. A deficit means lower external assets and borrowing from abroad.

The capital account: Includes unilateral capital transfers without consideration, which do not alter the gross return available. It also covers movements of funds generated by liquidating migrant assets, debt forgiveness towards creditors, and contributions made by the EU to its member states, such as regional development funds and cohesion funds.

  • Acquisition and Disposal of Non-Financial, Non-Produced Assets: This includes ownership of land or underground resources, and transactions related to intangible assets like patents and copyrights. This account includes rents that enable a country to live at a level beyond the flows its own means would allow.

The financial account: This includes investments outside Spain, foreign investments in Spain, Spain's loans and deposits abroad, and loans and deposits from abroad in Spain, as well as reserves. This categorization is done by the central bank.

  • Direct Investment: Occurs when an investor intends to maintain a stable presence in an enterprise, exerting a degree of influence on its management. Operations in this account include the purchase or sale of shares and property transactions.
  • Portfolio Investment: These are transactions in securities, net of direct investment. Financial products traded include equities, debt securities, money market instruments, or derivatives. If a country invests in foreign assets, its asset position increases.
