The Fall of the Monarchy

Permanent Crisis of the Political System

  • Increased prestige of the king.
  • The collaboration led to a dictatorship for the king.
  • There was no effective political system; the restoration failed because what Primo de Rivera did did not work.
  • The only figurehead was the head of state, Alfonso XIII.
  • Alfonso XIII decided whether to appoint a head of government to support the Republicans.
  • Berenguer's government grew, and opposition united.

Phase Two: August 1930 - Pact of San Sebastian

  • Formed by several Republican parties, nationalists, and some socialists.
  • An agreement was made to organize an effort to overthrow the king.
  • Upon overthrowing the king, an interim government would be formed, and elections would be called to establish a constituent government.
  • Months passed, and a revolutionary committee was formed (composed of the parties from the San Sebastian Pact).
  • The PSOE joined the revolutionary committee, leading to the formation of the Socialist-Republican coalition.

December 1930: The Jaca Uprising and Four Winds Event

  • Jaca: Two captains drew troops into the streets and proclaimed a republic. These captains were named Hernández and Galán.
  • Air Base at Four Winds: There was also a threat of revolt by Ramón Franco (brother of Francisco Franco). Leaflets were distributed from a plane, but it landed, proclaiming the republic in Portugal.

Consequences of the Events

  • 1st Consequence: A change of government occurred, and Admiral Aznar was appointed as the new head of government.
  • 2nd Consequence: The king's discredit increased significantly because he signed the executions of Galán and García Hernández.

Government of Admiral Aznar

  • The government initiated municipal elections as a preliminary step towards national elections.
  • The opposition presented a united front in the Republican Socialist coalition.
  • The atmosphere suggested that the elections would serve as a plebiscite on whether the public desired a monarchy or a republic.

April 1931: Proclamation of the Second Republic

  • Municipal elections were held, and the vote results were significant.
  • People took to the streets in demonstrations proclaiming the republic.
  • On April 14, the revolutionary committee met with the Director General of the Civil Guard, who only offered protection to the border.
  • On April 14, the revolutionary committee abdicated, the socialists were released from jail, and a provisional government was established, proclaiming the Second Republic.
