Prat de la Riba's Vision for Catalan Nationhood
Catalan Nationality: An Essay by Prat de la Riba
This text is an excerpt from the book "Catalan Nationality," an idealistic essay written in 1906 by the conservative politician Enric Barcelonés Prat de la Riba. It outlines a significant vision for the restoration of Catalan identity and autonomy.
Prat de la Riba was instrumental in founding a new union, the Catalan Autonomous Organization. Its political party, known as the Bases de Manresa, was drafted by Prat de la Riba himself.
Core Ideas: Nationhood within Spain
The fundamental concept presented is the reclamation of Catalonia as a nation within the Spanish state. This vision conceived of Spain as a federal state that would recognize and integrate the diverse nationalities residing within it, actively opposing historical separatist movements.
Prat de la Riba based his federalist idea on two core principles:
- Catalonia's distinct national personality.
- The unity of Catalonia within Spain.
Historical Context: The Restoration Period
This essay is situated within a pivotal moment of the Bourbon Restoration period, a time when Catalan nationalism was solidifying. Throughout the nineteenth century, Spain saw the emergence of intellectual circles and political groups that publicly characterized the distinct peripheral regions of the peninsula.
Several factors contributed to the rise of these nationalisms. Key among them were the presence of a unique language and distinct customs. Cultural renaissance movements sought to expand the use of the Catalan language and recover its history. Prat de la Riba believed the oligarchic and bureaucratic Spanish state hindered the progress of the Catalan bourgeoisie.
Roots of Catalan Nationalism
Catalan identity is described as having four distinct roots that eventually converged into a single movement:
- Protectionism: As an industrialized region, Catalonia did not benefit from free competition.
- Federalism: Championed by Valentí Almirall, who was an early advocate for Catalan distinctiveness.
- Traditionalism.
- The Renaissance: An apolitical literary and intellectual movement of a bourgeois character that emerged around the 1830s. Its aim was to disseminate the past and revive Catalonia's traditional cultural identity, particularly its language.
Consolidation and Political Action
In the 1890s, Catalan nationalism gained momentum in an industrialized Barcelona. Prat de la Riba was the primary architect in uniting Catalans. The Bases de Manresa did not advocate for separatism. In 1901, these principles formed the basis of the Lliga Regionalista (Regionalist League), a political party that called for the creation of Catalan courts and tribunals, and the official use of the Catalan language.
The leading figure of the Regionalist League in the Spanish parliament was Francesc Cambó.
The establishment of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya (Commonwealth of Catalonia) was a significant achievement, mobilizing Catalan people across the region.
