Mastering Handball Ball Handling and Passing

Common errors when catching the ball: Touching the ball with the palm of the hand is a grip synonymous with insecurity. You must avoid losing wrist mobility. Press your thumb and forefinger together to prevent the ball from falling to the ground and to maintain control.

Passes: Front, side, pronation, drive, drop-off, and behind-the-back passes.

Front passing errors: You have to guide the hand toward where you want the ball to go. The obligation does not end until the teammate receives the ball and you are in a position to move.

Common Reception Errors

  • Guiding without hands: Orientation must always be correct.
  • Wrong hand placement: Do not forget to place your thumbs and index fingers in a diamond shape.
  • Stopping the game: Receiving should be fluid; do not pause excessively between receiving and passing.

Shooting Techniques: Jump and Suspension Shots

When to Execute a Jump Shot?

A jump shot is typically used as a counter-attack completion. It should be held as close as possible to the goal, leaping over the 6-meter line. Throw with accuracy, placement, or force, depending on the circumstances.

When to Execute a Suspension Shot?

This is used to achieve a shot that crosses the defensive line in height. When the attacker is close to an opposing team's defense and wants to make a shot on goal, they elevate the shooting arm to position the ball over the hands of the defensive barrier. Release the ball when you reach maximum height.

Common Shooting Errors to Avoid

Do not rush; look and wait for the right time and technique. Do not let the opponent remove the ball during the act of shooting; protect it until it leaves your hand. Do not waste a shot on goal; execute it with sufficient precision and power. Master all techniques; if you specialize too much, you favor the opposing team.

Defensive Strategies and Positioning

Mistakes to avoid: You have to cover a large angle at all times without losing concentration. Never look away from the wrist of the opposing player holding the ball. Avoid movements that involve falling to the ground too often during launch attempts.

Defending an Attacker Without Movement

Deny possible offensive actions, especially those aimed at shooting on goal. To do this, use both hands: place one hand on the attacker's body (opposite the shooting arm) and the other in front of the ball. Keep your legs apart and positioned ahead on the side opposite the throwing arm.

Defending an Attacker During a Launch

Raise your arms toward the release direction, trying to coordinate your jump with the attacker's so you can intercept the ball the moment it leaves their hand.

Critical Defensive Mistakes to Prevent

Do not stay too far from the attacker. To prevent a clean, accurate pitch, get close and try to block the shot; if you do not succeed, at least make it difficult. It is undesirable to provide an unstable base that is easily overcome by the attacker; correctly separate your legs and lift the foot opposite the throwing arm. Do not hit the attacker's arm or touch the ball while it is in the hands of the opposing team.
