Understanding Relaxation Techniques
When considering relaxation, one immediately thinks of techniques that lead to voluntary psychic and muscular rest, resulting in immobility. However, relaxation can also be part of a flow of movements or used to provide dramatic weight.
Types of Muscle Relaxation
In the basic possibilities of working the muscle (contraction-relaxation), there are two types of "slack":
- Loosening-relaxation: Letting gravity act without resistance.
- Controlled decontraction or distention: This involves two levels of work:
- Passive mechanism: Letting the muscle's inertia act (elasticity of muscle tissue).
- Active consciousness: Controlling the relaxation process.
Both types of relaxation can be an integral part of movement or a path to rest and immobility. The energy of motion can thus be managed consciously with clear synchronization of active and passive phases, organized according to the expressive function of the movement.
The Benefits of Conscious Rest
Mastering these nuances of tonic bodily movement is an arduous and slow process. We refer now to the relaxation conducive to rest and immobility. This practice not only aids the proper functioning of the physiological mechanisms of the muscular system—undoing zone contractions and softening the joints—but also holds undeniable psychic value. The resulting relaxation is both physical and mental.
Global vs. Segmental Relaxation
Relaxation can be partial or global:
- Global Relaxation: The most important characteristics involve leading a person to realize and experience the weight of their body attracted by gravity, the support of contact surfaces, and internal concentration while isolating the external environment.
- Segmental Relaxation: This favors the dominance of independent body elements, such as arms, legs, or the trunk, in relation to one another.
Body relaxation is the fundamental base for all coordination work, dissociation, and independent movement chains.
