Malaria

Malaria: Transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. It is caused by a protozoan parasite of the genus Plasmodium. This parasite affects the liver cells and red blood cells (erythrocytes), where it reproduces. The rupture of the erythrocytes causes severe fever, chills, and anemia.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment: Antimalarial drugs. Prevention is the best method to avoid malaria. Mosquito control using insecticides is crucial.

Other Vector-Borne Illnesses

Other diseases transmitted by vectors include Yellow Fever (transmitted by Aedes aegypti), Dengue, West Nile Fever, and Lyme disease (transmitted by ticks).

Diarrheal Diseases

These are health problems caused by intestinal microorganisms that infect people, often spreading through contaminated food and water (gastrointestinal route). Heavy diarrhea causes significant water loss, requiring oral, intravenous, or subcutaneous rehydration.

The most important diarrheal diseases include:

  • Cholera
  • Dysentery
  • Salmonellosis
  • Typhoid Fever

Tuberculosis (TB)

A chronic and contagious disease primarily affecting the lungs and other organs. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis and spreads through saliva.

Treatment and Management

Treatment: Antibiotics. Increased TB cases are often seen in AIDS patients due to varied bacterial strains or drug resistance. Treatment is long (6 months).

AIDS

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition requiring combination drug therapy.

Transmission Mechanisms

Transmission occurs through:

  • Blood contact (e.g., sharing needles)
  • Sexual contact (unprotected)
  • Mother-to-child transmission (pregnancy, birth, nursing)

Prevention: Do not share needles; practice safe sex (protected sexual relations).

Influenza (Flu)

A disease caused by the influenza virus affecting the respiratory system.

Contagion and Symptoms

Contagion: Inhalation, ingestion, saliva, and other secretions.

Symptoms: Fever, sore throat, muscle aches, headache, cough, weakness, pneumonia, and malaise.

Treatment and Prevention

Treatment: Antiretrovirals, combination of drugs.

Prevention: Flu vaccination (recommended for the elderly, health personnel, and chronically ill people). This involves changes in the genetic material (DNA) of the virus.

Immunizations

Immunizations train the body's permanent defense foundations. Vaccines protect us by generating antibodies (defensive proteins that react specifically against the invading agent).

Types of Immunization

There are two main types of vaccines:

  1. Passive Immunization: Involves administering antibodies that provide immediate protection against the disease agent (lasts 3 or 6 months).
  2. Active Immunization: Involves introducing dead or weakened microorganisms so the body produces its own antibodies against the agent (protection lasts for years).

Specific Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

Smallpox Vaccine: Smallpox is an illness caused by a virus that only affects humans, transmitted by direct contact. Symptoms include high fever and a rash spreading from the mouth to the skin.

Tetanus: Caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which produces a potent toxin. Infection often occurs through contaminated wounds or soil.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are substances fabricated by microorganisms that function to inhibit the growth of bacteria. They are not effective against viruses.
