Forecasting Methods and Econometric Models Explained
What do projection methods try to find?
They try to find the overall pattern of data to project the future. These methods include:
- Moving Averages
- Exponential Smoothing
- Box-Jenkins
What is an econometric model?
An econometric model is a system of interdependent regression equations describing a sector of economic activities, sales, or profits.
Why conduct purchase and anticipation surveys?
These surveys are conducted in public to determine:
- The intentions of purchasing certain products.
- An index measuring the general feeling about present and future consumption, estimating how these feelings affect consumer habits.
This approach to forecasting is more useful than other techniques for tracking the development of demand and identifying danger points.
What is the purpose of an input-output model?
It is an analysis method that determines the flow of goods and services or inter-industry interest in an economy or a company and its market. It samples input flows that must occur for certain products.
What is the least squares method?
It is the most objective procedure to fit a straight line to a set of data presented in a scatter diagram, resulting in a straight line.
What else is the least squares method known as?
It is also known as linear regression theory.
What are the characteristics of least squares?
The resulting line has two important characteristics:
- The sum of the vertical deviations of points from the line of adjustment is zero.
- The sum of the squares of these deviations is at a minimum. No other line would have a smaller sum of squared deviations.
What is exponential smoothing?
It differs because it weights exponentially each of the previous claims for the purposes of calculating the average. The demand for more recent periods receives more weight, with the weights of the previous successive periods falling in a non-linear (exponential) manner.
What is first-order exponential smoothing?
The corresponding calculation requires two data points: the first is the actual demand for the latest period, and the second is the latest forecast obtained by using another method. As each time period finishes, a new forecast is made.
What are the advantages of smoothing?
Simple exponential smoothing and other exponential smoothing models provide an economical, "quick and easy" forecasting method. They share the following advantages: to forecast from one period to the next, you just need the demand for the latest period and the forecast for the fourth quarter.
What are predictions?
A prediction is a series of data based on a series of studies to determine the future demand of a product.
