Structural Engineering Fundamentals: Types and Conditions

Technology4.94 KB

Fundamentals of Structural Engineering

A structure is the set of elements in a body designed to resist the forces (loads) acting upon it, fulfilling three essential conditions:

  1. Stability: Remaining upright and preventing overturning.
  2. Resistance: Withstanding loads without breaking.
  3. Rigidity: Minimizing deformation under load.

Understanding Loads

The forces acting on a structure are known as loads. These loads are typically classified as either permanent (dead loads) or variable (live loads).

Classification of Structures

Structures are generally categorized into four main types:

  • Massive Structures: Characterized by their large volume and weight (e.g., pyramids, stone benches).
  • Vaulted Structures: Utilize arches and vaults to distribute forces (e.g., stone

Precision Machining and Surface Treatment Processes

Technology3.38 KB

What is a Machining Process?

A machining process is a term used to describe a variety of material removal processes in which a cutting tool removes unwanted material from a workpiece to produce the desired shape. The workpiece is typically cut from a larger piece of stock, which is available in a variety of standard shapes as shown below: flat sheet, I-beam, or rectangular bar.

Common Material Removal Techniques

Turning

Turning is a cutting operation in which the part is rotated as the tool is held on a machine called a lathe. The lathe spins the given product as the blades cut and scrape away the desired areas.

Boring

In boring, a boring tool goes into the workpiece axially and cuts along an internal surface to form different features. Boring is...

Common Cyber Attack Definitions and Techniques

Vishing: Voice Phishing Attacks

Using telephone calls to commit a phishing attack.

Smishing: SMS Phishing

Using SMS (text messages) to commit a phishing attack.

Pharming and DNS Poisoning

Directs users to a fake website when they enter the URL of a genuine site.

Whaling: Targeting High-Value Individuals

A specialized type of phishing attack specifically targeting high-ranking executives, such as CEOs, via email.

Salami Slicing Technique

A financial crime where small, often undetectable amounts of money are stolen from a large number of accounts. The cumulative gain is significant, but individual victims rarely notice the loss.

Fundamentals of Computer Networking

What is a Computer Network?

A computer network is a set of interconnected devices (computers, servers, peripherals) designed to share resources and exchange information efficiently.

Network Classification by Size (Scope)

Networks are classified based on their geographical scope:

  • LAN (Local Area Network): Covers a small, localized area, such as a home, office, or school campus.
  • MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Spans a city or large campus.
  • WAN (Wide Area Network): Extends over a large geographical distance, often connecting multiple LANs (e.g., the Internet).

Network Classification by Property

Networks can be categorized based on access rights and ownership:

  • Public Networks: Networks where access is available to the

Network Classification and IoT Communication Protocols

Technology3.92 KB

Defining Area Networks and Communication Ranges

Body Area Network (BAN)

This network utilizes wireless (radio) technology, specifically targeting operations on, in, and around the human body. It operates over a short range (< 10 m).

Personal Area Network (PAN)

A network used for communication among devices near a person. The devices do not necessarily need to be owned by that person. PANs can use either wireless or wired technology and operate over a short range (< 10 m).

Near-me Area Network (NAN)

A network enabling communication among wireless devices in close proximity. Devices are not required to be part of the same network; they can belong to different networks.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A network of devices that are in proximity, typically...

Transport Infrastructure and Modes of Travel

Technology2.59 KB

Essential Transport Infrastructure and Operations

Installations necessary for transport include roads, railways, airways, waterways, canals, and pipelines. These networks also feature terminals such as airports, railway stations, bus stations, warehouses, trucking terminals, refueling depots (including fueling docks and fuel stations), and seaports. Vehicles traveling on these networks may include automobiles, bicycles, buses, trains, trucks, people, helicopters, and aircraft. Operations deal with the way the vehicles are operated. In the transport industry, operations and ownership of infrastructure can be either public or private.

How LDRs, Transistors, and Flip-Flops Work

Technology2.87 KB

How LDRs and Transistors Work Together

LDR Circuit States and Behaviors

  • No light (LED is off): The LDR has high resistance. There are two paths; the path with less resistance passes more electrons. As there is little current, the transistor does not admit this current and does not feed the base of the transistor (current does not pass from the collector to the emitter).
  • Light is present (LED is on): The LDR has low resistance. This low resistance allows the current to pass and feed the base of the transistor, which turns on the LED. (When the LED is on, if we cover the LDR, the LED turns off).
  • No light (LED is off - alternative state): In the LDR, there is high resistance, and the LDR steals the base current of the transistor, so current does

Essential Components and Maintenance of Pneumatic Circuits

Technology3.4 KB

Essential Elements of Pneumatic Circuits

Pneumatic circuits rely on several key components to generate, transport, and control pressurized air:

  • Energy Generator: This element provides pressurized energy to the circuit. In a pneumatic system, this is primarily the compressor.
  • Transport Elements: These are the pipes or hoses through which the air circulates, joining the various circuit elements.
  • Actuators: These are the receivers that convert the received energy into other types of energy to perform a specific action (e.g., linear or rotary motion). In pneumatic circuits, the main component is the cylinder.
  • Control Elements: These elements open or close the circuit, regulating the flow. In pneumatic circuits, these are primarily valves, which allow
